A big thanks to all who made Commencement 2009 another wonderful Olin event! We’re grateful for all the alumni who joined. It was awesome to catch up with over 31% of you who traveled near and far to see one another on campus for this joyous occasion. A special thanks to Anthony Roldan, ’08 for doing such a great job planning the off-campus alumni activities. For those who were unable to make it this year, we hope to see you next year. Without further ado, here is the Alumni Update slideshow. Additionally, we are working diligently to post photos, but in the interim we've compiled a highlight reel of the speakers which you can view via www.olin.edu. Lastly, if you haven't already joined the OlinImages group on Flickr, do so now. We should have photos of commencement posted there by the end of next week.
Check it out: www.youtube.com/FranklinWOlinCollege. We're posting lectures, highlight videos and updates from President Miller on the new Olin YouTube channel. To date our most viewed video - with nearly 900 hits - is Woodie Flowers giving a presentation to the captivated Engineer of the Future audience. You won't want to miss it!
As we reflect back on academic year 08-09, one cannot help but be proud of all that has been accomplished. “During difficult times it is important to be persistent…” as President Miller noted in his Commencement ’09 speech. Hard work, dedication and a passion for a shared mission continue to be key attributes to our success. A snapshot of this was evident just last week when excitement radiated from campus like a beacon through fog. Students showcased their semester’s amazing work at Expo. Staff and faculty wrapped-up another school year with final grading, presentations and culminating special events. Graduates marched across stage to receive their well-deserved diploma. Parents and alumni reunited with the rest of the Olin Community to celebrate as one, great Olin family.
Such greatness would not be found without all of YOU. Each one of you makes a difference by giving to Olin in various ways. One way we are able to measure the support for Olin’s mission is through our participation rates.

*PLEASE NOTE: These percentages include those who have given gifts as of 5/20/09 and pledges due.
If you have an outstanding pledge, we encourage you to please fulfill it by 6/30/09. The College is grateful to all who have participated so far. By donating to Olin, each and every one of you is showing your commitment to its mission, its students, its leaders, and its future. Join us in celebrating Olin greatness! Our goals are set high – 100% participation!! Gifts of all sizes have an impact. Giving is quick and easy – you can even honor a colleague at the same time with a C.O.M.E.T.S.: 1. Mail a check payable to Olin College, to the Development office, or 2. make a credit card payment on line at https://www.olin.edu/giving/donation.aspx. Again, a sincere THANK YOU for all your support!

Alumni Association
The Alumni Association is made up of two class reps per graduated class until after 2011 when it will be large enough to implement a governing body, the Olin Alumni Council. As previously announced, your elected alumni class reps are Jessie Sullivan and Eamon Doyle. They join alumni reps, Will Clayton and Susan Fredholm (’06), Jeff Glickman and Kat Kim (’07), and Tiana Veldwisch and Anthony Roldan (’08). We are looking forward to working together to provide the resources you need to keep connected to Olin and one another. Improving the Alumni website, developing the Alumni Portal (which includes a new Alumni Directory), and increasing our alumni giving participation rates are our current major projects. These are currently going through developmental improvements, but we would appreciate hearing your insightful feedback at a later date - when updates have been made.
Alumni Website
Meanwhile, the current Alumni website contains general and alumni announcements and links to other informative pages on the main Olin site, a link to alumni Library resources, career services (Post Graduate Planning and Nacelink), event details, link to the current Alumni Directory, and eventually a link to the new Alumni Portal.
Alumni Directory
The Alumni Directory has a few functions:
1. Maintain your own contact information to share with Olin and your classmates 2. Search for your classmates - including those who have left Olin or are a part of future classes. More search functions, fields, tools and users (such as past and present faculty and staff) will be added in a future application, so stay tuned....
To log onto the Alumni Directory, please visit: https://www.olin.edu/alumnidirectory/
Your username is the standard Olin configuration (i.e. kraposa). Your initial password is your SIS ID number which you should remember from registering for classes and such. You will be prompted to change this password upon logging in for the first time.
Under the header "Alumni Directory" you can access your information via four of the sub-headings.You can view your own information under "Personal View." If you would like to edit your information click "edit" next to the section you wish to edit or click on the sub-header of the section you wish to edit, including Personal, Professional or Other. "Personal" is your contact information (name, phone, email, address, etc.) and “Forwarding Email” is where you can maintain your current external email to which your alumni life-time forwarding address (i.e. firstname.lastname@alumni.olin.edu) will forward. "Family" is for your spouse and children's information. "Professional" is your educational and occupation information (schools, degrees, business name, title, business contact information, etc.). "Other" is your involvements (ex. ski club), interests (ex. skiing) and accomplishments (ex. skier of the year). At your earliest convenience, please complete the fields with your information. We will be comparing it to and updating Jenzabar and will use it for future communication.
Alumni Forwarding Email
After Monday June15th all graduated ’09 student email accounts (i.e.firstname.lastname@students.olin.edu) will begin forwarding to your alumni life-time forwarding address (i.e. firstname.lastname@alumni.olin.edu). Emails sent to this alias will forward to your current external email which you are responsible for maintaining in the current Alumni Directory (in the Alumni Portal in the future), upon logging-on. To start, the alumni forwarding address will forward to the external email address that you provided in a response to the Registrar’s survey last fall. Please note that “lastname” in this alias will always be based upon what your last name was upon graduation.
Alumni List Serves (see FAQ for more details)
All current faculty, staff, and enrolled students can email the classof[insert year here]@olin.edu to reach those who graduated that year. Upon the students.olin.edu email accounts being disabled (after June 15th), those accounts will be removed from the above mentioned class distribution and it will forward to alumni-[insert class year]@lists.olin.edu. This email list serve will be populated with the @alumni.olin.edu addresses. It is the responsibility of the alum to maintain their forwarding address in current Alumni Directory (in the future, the Alumni Portal) upon being logged-on.
Graduate alumni will be able to use the list serve (alumni-[insert class year]@lists.olin.edu) to communicate with one another in that class. This will only be without moderation if you also maintain their external address membership. This is because you are not able to send from the alumni forwarding addresses but again, these must stay subscribed to the list serve and you are responsible for maintaining what email this forward to in the current Alumni Directory (in the future, the Alumni Portal). The alumni reps for that class year and a staff member of Parent and Alumni Relations are administrators to that class list. Emails from anyone outside of that graduating class list serve will be moderated.
To email those who have not graduated with that class but would like to be kept informed, one can use alumni-[insert year here]-friends@lists.olin.edu. It is the responsibility of the member to maintain their subscription. Unless wishing to reach only those non graduated associated with that class year, one would typically use this in conjunction with the alumni class list serve to send to both graduates and non-graduated for that class year, i.e. to send an email invitation to an unofficial reunion. The list will be moderated by the alumni representatives of that year and the Office of Parent and Alumni Relations.
With more than one class graduated, we have alumni-all@lists.olin.edu for all graduated and non-graduated alumni. Staff who provide certain resources and/or who need to communicate with alumni often are also members of these distribution lists.
Lastly, we are beginning to establish geographic location specific list serves. Currently we have boston-alumni@lists.olinalumni.org and bayarea-alumni@lists.olinalumni.org. Feel free to suggest others and we’ll be happy to set them up!
Alumni FAQs and IT Notice
Here is a list of further FAQs regarding alumni resources. You should have already received the IT notice for graduating seniors. Be sure to check it out for upcoming deadlines on warrantees, email account transitions and more.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have should you run into difficulty. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding as we develop and implement more alumni resources over time.
Congratulations and best of luck! Stay in touch!
