News You Can UsE
Wondering What’s Going on With Big Conversations or What Engineer of the Future 2.0 is All About?
You’re starting to piece it together, but we’re going to help…
From March 31-April 2, in conjunction with the University of Illinois, Olin will host a Summit on the Engineer of the Future 2.0. This event will center on April 1, Olin’s “Big Conversations” event for 2009. Karan Watson, Vice-Provost of Texas A&M University will be the keynote speaker and provide the foundation for the day’s agenda, which focuses on transforming undergraduate engineering education. A morning panel session, “Listening to the Engineers of the Future,” will feature recent graduates (including Olin’s own Janet Tsai ’06). Many outside visitors from around the US and abroad will be on campus to participate in the day’s activities. Students from the University of Illinois and other colleges, universities and institutes will be on campus as well. We are excited about the opportunities this collaborative event presents and hope you will all join us for the broadest Big Conversation yet to be held at Olin! Stay tuned for more details.

Leadership & Ethics Lecture Series Kicks Off Next Thursday
Once again President Miller has joined forces with Babson President Leonard Schlesinger and Wellesley College President H. Kim Bottomly to present the Leadership and Ethics Lecture Series. The first lecture of the spring semester will take place here at Olin next Thursday, February 19 beginning at 6:00 pm in the Milas Hall Auditorium. Ms. Frances Hesselbein, Chairman, Leader to Leader Institute is Thursday's featured speaker. She will speak on the topic of "Leaders of the Future: Ethics in Action." Ms. Hesselbein will focus on the need for principled, ethical leadership and will share three leadership experiences of her own, focusing on why they were significant and relevant to leaders of the future. She asks that participants ponder two questions: What do you think is the greatest challenge to young leaders today? and what are the three most important qualities for leaders today and in the future? Please join us for Thursday's presentation!

Tuition and Fees Approved for 2009-10
The Board of Trustees has approved new rates for tuition and fees in 2009-10. The Student Accounts & Records (StAR) Center will send fall semester bills to the student's home address in early July and payment will be due by August 3.  Unless the student has made special arrangements with Loretta Dinon, this will be the only billing statement.  In other words, separate statements are not sent to parents.

Spread the Love Through Giving
Olin’s caring community is evident in many ways including our wonderful participation rates.

We’re grateful for the donations received thus far. While we are surpassing previous year’s accomplishments, we still need your support. Spread the love this Valentine’s season by giving to the Phoenix Fund today! Mail a check payable to Olin College, to the Development office, or make a credit card payment on line at https://www.olin.edu/giving/donation.aspx. Now is the time to pull together to achieve our goals and continue to provide an excellent education for our students even in the face of these challenging economic times.

Riverside Shuttle to End Service as of February 27
The weekday, daytime shuttle van from and to the Riverside T station will end service on February 27. Ridership has been very low, with no regular Olin riders, since this service was instituted last fall. The Wellesley-Olin-Babson cross-registration shuttle will continue on its regular schedule.

    Trivia

In the last issue we asked "Which Olin student is featured on page 88 of the book "How many Olin students does it take to affix mailing labels and stamps to 7,000 postcards in 4 hours?" There were surprisingly few guesses to this one, but Mary Anne Lamar took home the prize with her guess of 12. The correct answer however was 14.

    Trivia buffs, do you know...

Q: What Olin student’s big sister is a news correspondent, living in and covering Turkey for the brand new (opened for business 1.12.09), web based, GlobalPost news service?

A: First person to respond to Alyson Goodrow with the correct answer receives a prize.
