On Wednesday, October 8 at 11:00 am in the Milas Hall Auditorium, the Presidential Lecture Series presents Bob Metcalfe. Mr. Metcalfe is the inventor of Ethernet, an MIT engineer, 3Com founder, InfoWorld pundit, recipient of the National Medal of Technology, and now Polaris partner. Join him in mining rich veins of Internet history for lessons on how to make energy “squanderably cheap and clean.” Click here for more information on the lecture and contact Joanne Kossuth with questions. We hope you'll join us for the event!
Friday, October 17 - Sunday, October 19 Olin will host its 5th annual Family Weekend. The event is a great opportunity for families to spend quality time with their students while visiting campus. Registration begins at 4:00 pm on Friday and we're offering a wide variety of things to do - from a welcoming dinner to student presentations and performances. Added bonus - fall in New England! The event will conclude at noon on Sunday. A detailed schedule is available on the Family Weekend website. All Olin community members are welcome. We hope to see you there!
Two of the festive activities planned for Family Weekend this year are apple picking and cider making. In collaboration with Olin's greening efforts, we'd like to ask staff, faculty and students to clean and recycle your plastic liquid containers, preferably gallon and half gallon sizes. These can be deposited on or before October 9. If you have any questions, please contact George Sass '10. We appreciate your help!
The process for nominating, selecting and recruiting speakers for the Olin commencement takes considerable planning and patience. Availability is a major constraint for many potential speakers and negotiations often require considerable lead-time, especially for speakers with significant national or international reputations. The Commencement Steering Committee at Olin maintains a continuing list of possible speakers, suggested by members of the greater Olin community, and forwards recommendations each year to President Miller and the Board of Trustees for their approval. The Commencement Steering Committee would appreciate your suggestions to expand our working list. Please submit your suggestions to Rod Crafts and include your rationale, describe any connection your nominee may have to Olin, and, if you have any special connection to the nominee that would facilitate our contacting her or him, please let us know.
Thank you very much for helping the Committee.
If you haven't yet read Jessie Sullivan's blog post you should because it's been featured in the ASCB's September 2008 newsletter. The ASCB annual meeting is the premier international meeting in the field of cell biology and is intended for scientists and students in academia, industry, government and higher education. Over 100 scientific sessions and 3,500 poster presentations covered a variety of scientific areas within the discipline.

“Save the Day” is Kate Campbell’s newest CD, which she’ll be celebrating at a CD release concert on October 18 at the Homegrown Coffeehouse. “Save the Day” is also a fine reminder not to miss the party at the Homegrown Coffeehouse, when one of the longest-running folk music venues in New England celebrates its 25th Anniversary. So much great music has happened on the Homegrown Coffeehouse stage that it’s hard to list it all – but 25 years of highlights are on the website, for people who like to look back at how the Boston folk scene has evolved. The Homegrown Coffeehouse is located at the First Parish Unitarian Church, at the corner of Great Plain and Dedham Avenue in Needham center. There is free parking and wheelchair access. Admission is $20.00/$17.00 students and seniors to benefit the Church. For more information, call 781-444-7478.
