| On February 27 beginning at 6:00 pm, Marshall Carter, Deputy Chairman of the Board of NYSE Euronext and former Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, will present the second of five Leadership and Ethics lectures in the Milas Hall Auditorium at Olin College. The Leadership and Ethics Lecture Series is sponsored by Olin, Babson and Wellesley College and is part of a course on professional ethics and leadership development that is being taught this spring at Olin. President Miller and Babson President Brian Barefoot are among the faculty for the course. Mr. Carter's presentation is titled "Leadership and Ethics: Reflections on 45 Years in the Workforce." He will discuss today’s business environment, one that is characterized by widespread uncertainty about some of our biggest financial institutions and trepidation about the near term economic outlook. During his presentation Mr. Carter will address the following questions: How has business arrived at this point? What is the link between leadership and ethics and how can new entrants to the workforce have faith in business leadership? It's often not the macro level ethical issues that recent graduates will face, but the smaller day-to-day challenges to operate and exist in an ethical environment. All members of the Olin and Needham communities are welcome. Parents and alumni, that means you too! Please join us!
The Big Conversations Committee would like to announce a change in date for the 2008 Big Conversations event as well as this year's featured speaker, Steve Mariotti. Steve is the President and Founder of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). NFTE's mission is to provide entrepreneurship education programs to young people from low-income communities. In an effort to accommodate Steve's schedule, we have moved the event out a week and it will now take place on April 9. Additional details will be available via the Big Conversations website in the coming weeks. We hope to see you there!
Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Moody has approved the recommendation of the Summer Book Program Advisory Committee to use Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals as the book for summer reading. The Convocation on The Omnivore's Dilemma will be held on Thursday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Milas Hall Auditorium. Suggestions for speakers or panelists may be forwarded to Rod Crafts or Allen Downey.
If you'd like to thank a community member for their efforts and support Olin's Annual Fund campaign at the same time, you can take advantage of our C.O.M.E.T.S. program! Contact the Development office or go online to make your donation.
That’s right. We’ve calculated it for you! Join the Office of Parent and Alumni Relations and fellow seniors as we celebrate “2008 Hours Until Graduation” (and until you actually become Olin’s third class of alumni). This event will be held this Monday night, February 25 from 9:00-11:00 pm in Roger's Pub on Babson's campus. Show us your talents on the dance floor, join in on some friendly competition of charades or other fun games, or just enjoy the break from school work. Heavy munchies will be provided. I.D. will be checked at the door. A $5 cover gets you in the door and a raffle ticket. More raffle tickets will be sold at the event for a chance to win cool prizes. Please e-mail Nancy Doremus and Conor Frackleton if you have any questions.
On Friday, February 29 Olin senior Carmelle Tsai will present her work at the Fifth Annual Greater Boston Anthropology Consortium (GBAC) Student Conference. Carmelle’s paper, based on research done during an anthropology class at Wellesley, is called "Cancer in the Family: Coping with Childhood Leukemia."
The event is co-sponsored by the anthropology programs of Brandeis University, Clark University, Olin College, Tufts University, Wellesley College, and Wheaton College. This is the third consecutive year that Olin students have presented work at this conference. The conference, at Brandeis University, is free and open to the public. Click here to learn more.
On February 29, March 1, 7 & 8 at 8:00 pm in the Sorenson Theater at Babson College, FWOP will present its second musical — James Lapine’s Into the Woods. The production is directed by Jonathan Cass '08 with musical direction by Paul Mandel '09; was produced by Olin students and stars students from Babson, Wellesley, and Olin Colleges. Tickets are $8.00 or $5.00 for students and seniors. About Into the Woods.... classic fairy tales, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, (among others) are woven into this tale of a baker and his wife who seek to break a spell of childlessness laid upon them by a crabby witch. The characters plot to get their wishes by whatever means necessary. In the second act a furious Giantess arrives by beanstalk to seek revenge for her husband, whom Jack killed. Finally, events turn serious as the characters learn about community responsibilities, the penalties of greed, and the consequences of their actions. Email Jonathan Cass or call the Sorenson Theater, 781-239-5682, with questions.
During the last month of the semester, the library reached out to the Olin community for input into our strategic planning process. We want to thank everyone who participated, and to provide an update to our planning. All told we had more than 120 students, faculty and staff complete surveys. Congratulations to Rachel Nancollas and Sylvia Schwartz for being our student winners in the library prize drawing.
The library staff has begun processing all of the data. We have already made a few changes, and will be writing our plan and creating longer term goals throughout the semester. In the spirit of picking low-hanging fruit, here are a few of our immediate actions:
• The New Books shelf is back in the form of a wooden cart in front of the circulation desk.
• The Library is working with IT on an additional path to Library databases from off-campus for those with VPN issues.
• Push/Pull signs will appear on the Library doors as soon as we find frames consistent with campus design. The wording of the Library access sign was tweaked to be more welcoming.
• Interlibrary loan issues such as poor quality on scanned copies are being addressed.
Summary reports of the strategic planning forms will be available to the community by the end of March. A new Library strategic plan will be in place by the end of the semester. Once again, thanks to everyone who gave their time and insights to our planning process. Questions? E-mail Dee.
If you’d like to advertise an event, thank the community for something you can submit an email to announcements@olin.edu and both the Office of Communication and the folks who author the CORe Digest will receive said information. Also if you’d like this information posted to the plasma screen TV’s in Milas Hall and the Campus Center, you can send a formatted powerpoint slide to Alyson Goodrow and she will load it onto the TV for you. Happy advertising!
The Facilities Use Committee and IT department would like to remind you to email Joseph Hunter, copying helpdesk@olin.edu should you have any technical or audio visual support requests, regarding upcoming events you're involved in planning. The goal is to avoid double booking our facilities and ensuring that your event will be staffed with a technical person if need be. If technical assistance is required, IT suggests providing them with a minimum of two weeks notice to ensure they are able to recruit sufficient staff from their student worker pool.
The Olin Tutoring Squad is a business that was formed in the fall as part of the Foundations of Business and Entrepreneurship class here at Olin. The PBS kids' show, Design Squad, is looking for bright 18- and 19-year-olds to take part in an engineering challenge show over the summer.
To be cast, you need to be available to work and live in Boston from June through August 15, you will be provided housing and you will be required to report to "work" full-time (five days a week; nine hour days with an hour for lunch). This is a big commitment, but you will get paid to have a ton of fun, learn a lot about engineering, and be on a national television show. To access the FAQ click here and go to P:\Design Squad TV show to complete the entry form.

Just a friendly reminder that we would like to bring on two more members to join Elizabeth Firstenberg and John Harley in representing the parents of the class of 2011 on the Parent Advisory Board. We also have an opening for representation of the class of 2009. To those who already expressed interest during Family Weekend last October or at a later date, please let us know if you are still interested. If you have not already expressed interest but would like to, now is the time. To aid in the selection process, it would be most helpful if you could email a brief bio. no later than Monday, March 3, 2008. It will help give us background on who we are working with and what interests they have in Olin's PAB. Please include a few sentences on your background (career, experience, interest in the PAB, etc.). A resume is not necessary. We’ll be sharing the compiled bios. with the rest of the PAB for discussion during our spring conference call. Members are selected by Charlie Nolan, VP of External Relations and Enrollment, at the recommendation of Krissy Raposa, Assistant Director of Parent and Alumni Relations, and the PAB.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Krissy. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Entrepreneurial Energy Expo (E3) is an annual event hosted by the Babson Energy and Environmental Club (BEEC) at the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College. E3 is designed to bring the energy industry to Babson to provide insight into emerging business trends, to connect students with potential future employers, and to develop Babson’s relationship with the rapidly expanding, and entrepreneurial, cleantech sector. While the event is designed to provide opportunities for all firms with operations in the energy and environmental industries (traditional or alternative), this year’s conference will focus primarily on cleantech. In the last issue we asked "What famous pilot used the meadow near Olin as a landing strip?" Allen Downey was the first to respond correctly with an answer of Amelia Earhart.
Trivia buffs, do you know...
Q: How many Candiates' Weekends (Olin's longest standing tradition) has Olin hosted to date?
A: First person to respond to Alyson Goodrow with the correct answer receives a prize.
