News You Can UsE
Presidential Lecture Series Presents John Sculley - Former CEO of Apple
On January 30 at 11:00 am in the Olin College auditorium, Mr. John Sculley, a former CEO of Apple and Pepsi, will address attendees on the topic of "Designing the Future: Business Leadership & Great Design - How design-centric product marketing can transform the ground rules of building companies." Mr. Sculley is best known for combining product design innovations with creative marketing. He will discuss lessons learned creating and launching the first plastic soft-drink bottles, the first Macintosh, desktop publishing, and the Powerbook notebook computer. He'll also present some of his current work helping develop the "3rd screen in the home" for Verizon and Shenzhen based PCH International's innovative asset-light supply chain systems.

From the President's Desk:
To All Members of the Olin Community,

J. Thomas Krimmel will leave his position as Chief Development Officer at the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) in New York City to become the Vice President for Development at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering on April 1, subject to final approval by the Board of Trustees.

Tom has been the chief development officer at four different institutions over the last 26 years, including serving as Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations at Babson College from 1990 to 2005. During the 1990s, he guided Babson’s $122 million fund-raising campaign. Babson has been an educational partner with NFTE since 1994 and Tom served as the Babson representative in this partnership for many years. He was a member of the Executive Committee at Babson when the decision was made in the mid-1990s to collaborate with the F. W. Olin Foundation to create an independent college of engineering adjacent to the Babson campus. He has been an advocate of Olin College and its mission since the College was created in 1997.

Since 2005 Tom has lead the NFTE development team, which increased gifts received by 58% over a two-year period to $12.2 million while increasing the number of donors by 33%.

Tom and his wife, Beth, the executive director of the Wellesley Historical Society, reside in Millis. They have two adult children and two granddaughters.

Alison Black to Run Boston Marathon Again; This Time to Raise Money for Liver Disease
Many of you know that Alison Black ran the Boston Marathon in April of 2007. At the time her only goal was to finish and have fun. She successfully completed that goal and has decided to run the Boston Marathon again in April of 2008. This time however, she is raising funds for a very important cause: liver disease. Some of you may also know that Tiana Veldwisch's mom, Marlene, was diagnosed with hepatitis C. In fact, some Olin community members supported Marlene and Tiana by joining their team, the Hepa Titans, at the Liver Foundation walk in September 2007. Alison will be running specifically for Marlene but the money goes to the entire Liver Foundation. Please help continue this support by contributing to her efforts to raise funds for the American Liver Foundation. There are many ways you can help. You can donate money via this web site: http://www.active.com/donate/liverteam08/alfABlack or by writing a check to the American Liver Foundation and giving that to Alison. Financial donations are not due until May of 2008, but money submitted prior to the marathon on April 21 of 2008 are especially appreciated. Or you can help by supporting Alison's fundraising efforts. She'll be doing a Valentine cookie sale in February so if you have baking talent (or at least interest!) then she could use your help. If you are interested in helping to fundraise at all, just contact Alison and she'll put you to good use. (Click here to access a PDF of the Fall 2007 ALF newsletter which contains a front-page article about Marlene…and a picture of the Hepa Titans! Some Olin students are in this picture too!)

Annual Fund Reminder
It's the time of year to celebrate all that we have accomplished! Consider a gift to the annual fund to help sustain our awesome Olin community. Last year, 51% of faculty and staff, 75% of parents, 48% of alumni parents and 95% of total alumni participated in the annual fund campaign. These generous gifts were critical in terms of demonstrating the internal commitment to the College that makes a real difference in our ability to work with grant makers, corporations and foundations.  In support of our continuous innovation precept we are seeking to improve upon those participation rates. Our goal is 100% participation on the part of all Olin College constituencies.

It is easy to help us achieve the 100% goal. Mail a check, payable to Olin College, to the Development Office or make a credit card payment on line at https://www.olin.edu/about_olin/online_donation.asp. Contact Joanne Kossuth with any questions.

It's Always a Good Time to Give Thanks
If you'd like to thank a community member for their efforts and support Olin's annual fund campaign at the same time, you can take advantage of our C.O.M.E.T.S. program! Contact the Development Office or go online to make your donation.

Trivia
In the last issue we asked people to list three of the "7 reasons you should apply to an engineering college that doesn't exist" according to one of the College's first marketing brochures. Jerzy Wieczorek was the first to answer correctly.

Trivia buffs, do you know...

Q: Back in the day, before Olin had actual buildings, how many trailers made up the MAC (modular academic center)?

A: First person to respond to Alyson Goodrow with the correct answer receives a prize.
