Annual Fund Reminder
It's the time of year to celebrate all that we have accomplished! Consider a gift to the annual fund to help sustain our awesome Olin community. Last year, 51% of faculty and staff, 75% of parents, 48% of alumni parents and 95% of total alumni participated in the annual fund campaign. These generous gifts were critical in terms of demonstrating the internal commitment to the College that makes a real difference in our ability to work with grant makers, corporations and foundations.  In support of our continuous innovation precept we are seeking to improve upon those participation rates. Our goal is 100% participation on the part of all Olin College constituencies.

It is easy to help us achieve the 100% goal. Mail a check, payable to Olin College, to the Development Office or make a credit card payment on line at https://www.olin.edu/about_olin/online_donation.asp. Contact Joanne Kossuth with any questions.

Enjoy the holidays!

Give the Gift of Thanks
The holidays are a great time of year to thank a community member for their efforts and support Olin's annual fund campaign at the same time? Take advantage of our C.O.M.E.T.S. program and celebrate us! Contact the Development Office or go online to http://www.olin.edu/development/comets.asp

From the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs...

Steve Schiffman Named Associate Dean for Academic Programs
The reorganization of the senior administration that took effect this fall, which combined the Provost and Dean of Faculty into the Vice President of Academic Affairs position, also established the position of Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Curricular Innovation. Olin's Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mike Moody is very pleased to announce that Stephen Schiffman will serve the College in this position. He will begin immediately, and has agreed to serve through the fall semester of 2008, and at most through the spring of 2009. All of us at Olin know Steve as a great colleague with much wisdom, experience and a temperate approach to handling the many issues and challenges of building the curriculum and the College; Steve has been a vital contributor to Olin from the earliest days. Steve came to Olin from Babson College, and he is appointed as Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at both Olin and Babson. At Babson, Steve was Dean of the Undergraduate Program and was the architect of the extensive curricular reform effort that led Babson to its position as the leader in entrepreneurship education and innovation. Steve holds a Ph.D. degree in mathematics from Dartmouth College, and an S.M. degree from the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management. I look forward to working with Steve to advance the goals of the faculty and College for the development, support and improvement of our academic programs.

Mail Services During Intersession:
Due to the college being closed 12/24 through 1/108, there will be no internal mail service or package delivery on those days. Regular service will be provided through the end of the day on 12/21 and resume on 1/2/08. Mail will be picked up from the Needham post office on the mornings of 12/26, 12/28 and 12/31. If you need access to the mail on those days, please contact Scott Slaboden, prior to Wednesday, 12/19. There will be no UPS/FedEx/DHL-Airborne deliveries to the college during this time. Students studying away for the spring semester, that want their mail forwarded, need to provide Ed Crawford with preprinted address labels. Mail forwarding will begin 1/2/08 and follow USPS standard rules. Since Babson College is closing at the end of day on Friday, 12/21, the last mail run to Babson will be the morning of Friday, 12/21. All Babson mail gathered after this time, will be held until 1/2/08. Should you have any questions, please let us know.

Happy Holidays from all of us in Campus Services!

Year-end Announcements from Financial Services
Accounts payable
The college will have its final December check run on Friday, December 21 and direct deposit (ACH) for employee reimbursements on Monday, December 24. To ensure timely processing and payment, departments are requested to follow the normal deadline and forward all invoices, check requests, and employee expense reports to the Financial Services Department no later than 5:00 pm Tuesday, December 18. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Wanda Cabana at extension 2427 or Vivian Glassman at extension 2419.

Timesheets for non exempt staff and student employees
The first pay date of the New Year for non exempt staff and student employees is Friday, January 4 and covers the weeks ending Saturday, December 22 and 29. Before leaving for the intersession break, please make sure to turn in your timesheets for these two weeks no later than Friday, December 21 at 5:00 pm Staff members who need to work during the intersession break will be granted compensatory time off (please see Staff Manual for details). If you have any questions and concerns, please contact John Easland at extension 2418 or Jack Mui at extension 2421.

Travel reimbursement changes
The IRS has changed the mileage reimbursement rate for personal vehicles used for business to 50.5 cents from 48.5 cents per mile. Since Olin’s rate is tied to the IRS rate, please request 50.5 cents per mile for travel on or after January 1, 2008. A new Expense Report form will be available on the Portal after January 1. Please use this form and discard any copies of old forms. Please contact Jack Mui at extension 2421 with any questions and concern.

Recruiting a New Reader of 15-Word Passages at Commencement
Each senior has the opportunity to provide a passage of up to 15 words to be read as they approach the stage at Commencement. Leslie Larocca read these passages at Commencement '06 and Commencement '07. With her departure, we need to find a new reader.

What's involved? Being comfortable reading the passages in front of an audience of 800+, a commitment to work with seniors who supply unique passages (other languages, sounds, etc.), and participation in the Commencement rehearsal to practice the timing.

If you are interested in assuming this responsibility, please contact Rod Crafts, chair of the Ceremony Subcommittee of the Commencement Steering Committee. Rod will schedule auditions with the Steering Committee.

Reminder: Video Contest: Olin in 5

Reminder: Toys for Tots 2007 Drive

Beginning Monday, November 26 thru Saturday, December 15, Public Safety will be sponsoring the annual Toys for Tots program at Babson and Olin Colleges to provide toys to underprivileged children. The response to this program has grown dramatically over the past few years and last year's response was remarkable! We invite you to join us again this year to make the holidays very special for a child who would normally not have the joys of receiving holiday presents.

Toys are needed for children of all ages, however please do not donate stuffed animals as they are not accepted by the U.S. Marines. Toys must be new and in the original packaging.

Once again, Chief John Jackson invites you to trade a parking ticket for a toy. If you have received a parking ticket for a violation, other than parking in a Handicap Space or a Fire Lane, between the dates of November 15 and December 15, 2007 the ticket will be voided when you present a new, unwrapped toy with a value of at least half of the parking fine. Please note that during this period only one ticket, per person will be invalidated upon the donation of a toy.

Many people do not realize that the United Parcel Service (UPS) donates their trucks to pick up the toys from drop off locations. Last year UPS sent two trucks to Babson to transport toys to the U.S. Marine Reserves for distribution. Please help us in our efforts to make this a great holiday season for children in need. Please go to our website and click the link for information on our drop off locations. We will be posting pictures of the collection from time to time. Thank you again from all of us at Public Safety.

Parents, Did You Know?
Matching Gift Reminder for Parents and Alumni
Cick here to see whether or not your company matches charitable gifts. Taking a few minutes to fill out the paperwork or web form at your company can result in your gift having double or triple the impact! Let's maximize our support of Olin!

Alumni, Did You Know?
Get in on the Alumni Holiday Card Exchange
As snail mail is so rare now-a-days your alumni reps thought it would be fun to organize a holiday card exchange for all Olin Alumni. If you'd like to participate in sending and receiving a card or two, email Kat Kim before Tuesday, December 18 (or better yet, just do it now!). Kat and her fellow reps will randomly assign who you'll send a card to, and let you know by Wednesday, December 19. If you want to sign up to send/receive several cards that's fine too - just let us know how many. If things are little crazy for you right now, don't worry, we are suggesting January 10 as a good deadline to send your cards out. Please make sure the address you have listed in the Alumni Directory is up to date, otherwise we guarantee you no cards or holiday happiness. And nobody wants that...

Samsung's Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), Korea
Samsung is interested in Olin students for its research internship in Korea next summer. Thirty students will be brought in from schools all over the world to work with Samsung research engineers for eight weeks on a project. Samsung will provide paid housing, round trip airfare, a daily meal allowance and a small salary. Normally, this program is only for graduate students, but they said they're very interested in having some of our Olin undergrads there as well!

The following is the process that Samsung has asked Olin Students to follow:

  • Prepare a cover letter and resume and send them to me via email by January 2, end of day.
  • Let Sally know if you're interested in pursuing this opportunity ASAP and she'll watch for your resume and be sure to include it with the batch.
  • Sally will then send the resumes and cover letters directly to Samsung for review.
  • Final candidates may then be asked to fill out the on line application on the Samsung site, which will be available between January 15 - March 15, 2008.
