Upon recommendation of the Commencement Steering Committee and with the consent of the Board of Trustees, President Richard K. Miller invited Dr. James J. Duderstadt of the University of Michigan to deliver the charge to the 2008 graduates. Dr. Duderstadt is President Emeritus and University Professor of Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan, an international leader in engineering education, and a member of the Olin College President's Council. A recipient of the National Medal of Technology, former Chair of the National Science Board, and a member of US Education Secretary Spellings' Commission on the Future of Higher Education, he has served on numerous other national boards and has received many awards. A graduate of Yale and Caltech, his teaching and research activities include nuclear science and engineering, applied physics, computer simulation, science policy, and higher education. At the University of Michigan, he currently directs the program on Science, Technology and Public Policy in the Gerald R. Beginning Monday, November 26 thru Saturday, December 15, Public Safety will be sponsoring the annual Toys for Tots program at Babson and Olin Colleges to provide toys to underprivileged children. The response to this program has grown dramatically over the past few years and last year's response was remarkable! We invite you to join us again this year to make the holidays very special for a child who would normally not have the joys of receiving holiday presents.
Toys are needed for children of all ages, however please do not donate stuffed animals as they are not accepted by the U.S. Marines. Toys must be new and in the original packaging.
Once again, Chief John Jackson invites you to trade a parking ticket for a toy. If you have received a parking ticket for a violation, other than parking in a Handicap Space or a Fire Lane, between the dates of November 15 and December 15, 2007 the ticket will be voided when you present a new, unwrapped toy with a value of at least half of the parking fine. Please note that during this period only one ticket, per person will be invalidated upon the donation of a toy.
Many people do not realize that the United Parcel Service (UPS) donates their trucks to pick up the toys from drop off locations. Last year UPS sent two trucks to Babson to transport toys to the U.S. Marine Reserves for distribution. Please help us in our efforts to make this a great holiday season for children in need. Please go to our website and click the link for information on our drop off locations. We will be posting pictures of the collection from time to time. Thank you again from all of us at Public Safety.
The Summer Book Program Advisory Committee has narrowed the list of 23 titles suggested by members of the Olin community to four for thorough review between now and early February:

2. Punished by Reward by Alfie Kohn
3. The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan
4. Choices and Illusions by Eldon Taylor
The Committee will make a final recommendation to Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mike Moody, in mid-February. Copies of the book will be distributed to the Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011 in May and mailed to the Class of 2012 in June. The Convocation will be held on Thursday evening, August 28.
Thanks to all who suggested books this year. Special thanks to the Class of 2006 for designating the Summer Book Program as their class gift.

Yardwork? Babysitting? Office Work? We’ve got you covered.
This January, approximately 20 Olin students will be traveling to Juarez, Mexico on the Olin Christian Fellowship Mission Trip. One of the most prominent problems in Juarez is the lack of decent and affordable housing. We will be working with Casas por Cristo to provide housing for a family in need. We need your help. Hire a group of college students to come to your house or office and help out with your yard work, babysitting, house repairs, filing, or other needs. All money raised will go toward building supplies, ground travel, housing, and covering the costs of our volunteer staff for our upcoming mission trip to Juarez. For further information email Kent Munson.
The College is updating emergency contact information for students. We have added a link for updating this information to the "Students" Tab on the portal. The link is located under the heading "Emergency Contact Information".
Please be advised that bills for spring semester have been printed and mailed to the students’ on-campus mailbox per our policy in the Student Handbook on page 57 and page 70 in the Parent Handbook. The due date is December 3. A separate bill will not be sent to the “home” address.* To parents, please be sure to communicate with your student if you are the payer of the bill and ask that a copy be forwarded to you. If payment is not received by the due date a late fee of $150 will be assessed.
If you have contracted with TMS to pay monthly, please review your budget to ensure that your budgeted amount will cover the remaining balance for the year. The account is covered as long as the amount due equals $0.00 by the last scheduled payment. If there is a discrepancy, please contact TMS at 1-800-463-6994 to adjust the budget amount or contact the StAR Center.
* Please note: If the student had a “billing address” on file with the StAR Center, the bill was mailed to that address.
Google and Specialized are searching for the brightest engineering minds on earth for the first ever Innovate or Die Pedal-Powered Machine Contest. They're asking students to invent and build environmentally friendly, zero-emission machines that transform human pedal power into a new and useful purpose. After you build it, film it and post it on YouTube by Sunday, December 15. The Grand Prize for the most innovative submission will be $5,000 and a Specialized Globe bike for the winner(s). The inventors behind the top 5 runner-up inventions will also receive Specialized Globe bikes. This is an opportunity to flex your inventive muscle and have some fun doing it. And perhaps even help save our planet, one pedal stroke at a time. For an example innovation and contest specifics, please visit innovate-or-die.com.
