On Wednesday, November 14 at 11:00 am in the Olin Center Auditorium, the Presidential Lecture Series presents Dr. Claire Gaudiani. Dr. Gaudiani is an expert on the history and economics of American philanthropy. She is also a clinical professor at New York University, where she directs the graduate program in philanthropic studies. Additionally, Dr. Gaudiani recently wrote "The Greater Good" (Henry Holt/New York Times Books). This widely-cited book argues that Americans are not generous because we are rich, but rich because we are generous. Click here for more information on Claire Gaudiani and contact Joanne Kossuth with questions. We hope you'll join us for the event!
President Miller and the entire President’s Cabinet (Rod Crafts, Steve Hannabury, Joanne Kossuth, Mike Moody, and Charlie Nolan) would like to invite all faculty, staff and students to be our guest at a Thanksgiving luncheon on Thursday, November 15, beginning at noon. This 7th annual Thanksgiving luncheon is one of the oldest traditions at Olin College and it provides an opportunity for the entire community to come together to enjoy an excellent roast turkey meal and the good company of friends, colleagues and classmates. Please show your Olin ID card at the check-in desk when you arrive. We look forward to seeing you.
The College is updating emergency contact information for students. We have added a link for updating this information to the "Students" Tab on the portal. The link is located under the heading "Emergency Contact Information".
December 19 and 20 is fall Expo! Once again, we would like to ask you to recommend people to invite as guests and external evaluators for Expo. Keep in mind that external evaluators should be in a position to assess college students and compare their work to other college students and college graduates: in other words, they should be professionals or college/grad school academics who work with college students and college graduates on a daily basis. Please send the person’s name, title, affiliation and contact information (ESPECIALLY email address) to Suzanne Alcott, by EOD Monday, November 12.
Please be advised that bills for spring semester have been printed and mailed to the students’ on-campus mailbox per our policy in the Student Handbook on page 57. The due date is December 3. A separate bill will not be sent to the “home” address.*
To parents, please be sure to communicate with your student if you are the payer of the bill and ask that a copy be forwarded to you. Another option would be for the student to bring the bill home during the Thanksgiving Break. There will still be enough time to send payment to meet the December 3 due date. If payment is not received by the due date a late fee of $150 will be assessed.
If you have contracted with TMS to pay monthly, please review your budget to ensure that your budgeted amount will cover the remaining balance for the year. The account is covered as long as the amount due equals $0.00 by the last scheduled payment. If there is a discrepancy, please contact TMS at 1-800-463-6994 to adjust the budget amount or contact the StAR Center.
* Please Note: If the student had a “billing address” on file with the StAR Center, the bill was mailed to that address.
Olin’s Administrative Council, an advisory body to the President and Cabinet, has begun an initiative to examine the current policies and procedures of the College with a view toward recommending ways to streamline operations. Council members may be in contact with individuals and departments in the near future requesting information about current policies and procedures in effect at the College. Contact Terri Dunphy for more information.
Google and Specialized are searching for the brightest engineering minds on earth for the first ever Innovate or Die Pedal-Powered Machine Contest. They're asking students to invent and build environmentally friendly, zero-emission machines that transform human pedal power into a new and useful purpose. After you build it, film it and post it on YouTube by Sunday, December 15. The Grand Prize for the most innovative submission will be $5,000 and a Specialized Globe bike for the winner(s). The inventors behind the top 5 runner-up inventions will also receive Specialized Globe Bikes. This is an opportunity to flex your inventive muscle and have some fun doing it. And perhaps even help save our planet, one pedal stroke at a time. For an example innovation and contest specifics, please visit innovate-or-die.com.
