39 companies (several with alumni in attendance) came to campus yesterday, October 11, to talk with students about opportunities for collaboration, internships and full time jobs. In addition to this great turnout, the day was full of workshops on choosing a major, how and when to submit graduate school applications, mock interviews, appropriate professional dress, and the world of fellowships and scholarships. At the end of the day, several alumni talked to students about their experiences in the 'real world' and handed over some great tips on negotiation, work vs. graduate school, and cooking for themselves vs. being served at Olin! It was a significant step toward preparing students for the job and graduate school search process, as well as nailing down summer and post-graduation plans. Anyone looking to follow up with a company who was in attendance, or who is looking for additional tips, please don't hesitate to visit the Office of Post Graduate Planning or contact Sally Phelps.
Thanks to all who submitted photos for our first open call for photos, we received some really great submissions. Feel free to check them out on Flickr.

Ricoh Color Copier/Printer: It is important to use paper designed specifically for color printing and copying in this unit. We have provided paper for this printer, but if you are planning a large print/copy job, please be sure to order and supply your own paper so as not to deplete supplies meant for general use. You can order the following from our Office Depot catalog. Office Depot Color Copier Item # 727-441 8.5x11 (This is 24 lb paper with 104 brightness and can be used for single or double sided color printing/copying.)
Color copiers require a heavier paper to provide a stable surface for the application of color. 24lb paper or higher is recommended to prevent jams and guarantee quality of printing. Please follow these recommendations when ordering additional paper.
DesignJet 500 Wide Carriage Printer: There is a 42in spindle of standard poster paper provided for this printer in the computer lab. This printer can also accommodate single sheets of 42 in wide paper. For large print projects, please notify the helpdesk to order additional paper. Photo quality paper is available by request by emailing helpdesk@olin.edu. Please note: 1) It is important to send your print jobs to this printer from the computer lab, as the paper must be checked prior to printing and the print job should be monitored. 2) Do not trim print jobs on the counters, as the razors will damage the surface.
Please notify the Help Desk if you are unsure how to load paper and/or toner in either of these printers; or if you use any supplies that need to be replenished. Additionally please use the recycle bin for all unneeded printing and place all other items in the trash bin.
This computer lab area is used for multiple purposes, and it is important to respect all equipment in the area and to keep the area clean for the next user. We appreciate your cooperation! The Summer Book Program Advisory Committee is accepting suggestions for next summer's book. The committee will consider four factors in reviewing your suggestions: readability, lends itself to a Convocation discussion, relates to the Olin curriculum, and is available in paperback or at paperback price. Suggestions (title, author and brief rationale) should be sent to Rod Crafts by Wednesday, October 31. The Summer Book Program is supported by the class gift from the Class of 2006. Mark your calendars now for next fall's Convocation on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium.

Area receptions bring together Olin alumni, parents, corporate partners and friends of the college with the purpose of meeting with President Miller as well as participating Trustees and get an update on the college.

The Babson/Olin College Department of Public Safety staff is sponsoring Rape Aggression Defense Systems (RAD) for woman only. The course is open to both Babson and Olin community members. The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by Babson College Police Officer’s who are nationally certified as R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates. Three of the original 2006 DARPA SCOPE students, Keoni Mahelona '07, Alex Epstein '07 and Katy Moyer (Wellesley), will be going to the upcoming DARPA Urban Challenge which takes place on Nov 5 in the California desert. The three continued working on the car this summer, did great work and built a great race car ("Olin" is on the door in the photo). Keoni, Alex and Katy also were interviewed for an hour-long Discovery Channel documentary on the MIT/Olin DARPA team saying good things about Olin and the education they got here. Wish them luck! We'll be sure to report back with the results of the race.

Thanks to the help of Olin students, Casey Canfield '10, Sarah Allen '10, Alex Jones '10, and Carl Tappan '11 who all volunteered to help with Needham's First Annual Take Back the Nigh, the event was a huge success. For the approximately 150 people who attended…
- They were greeted with complimentary glow bracelets, tea lights and program of events.
- Throughout the event they could peruse resources and pamphlets, buy a t-shirt, make a donation, or grab a free snack.
- The gazebo was beautifully decorated with ribbon, crepe paper and balloons for the two amazing opening and closing bands: The Juicebox Sandal and Makeshift.
- To kick off the night we had an amazing speaker, Jo Patterson from Reach Beyond Domestic Violence. She gave some powerful statistics about domestic and sexual violence as well as inspiration for those of us who want to help.
- The candle light march throughout town was the most energetic part of the night as students and adults alike took to the streets chanting “Needham Unite, Take Back the Night!” Restaurant goers and people driving by stopped to look with interest while Natalie from Needham Cable filmed it all!
- After transitioning to a more somber section of the evening we heard from Jessica Hollander of Casa Myrna Vasquez and Jo Patterson who both shared their own survivor stories. Volunteers also read anonymous testimonials.
- Powerful, sobering, and inspiring only begin to describe what was said.

"Olin College Remembers Two of its Students Who Died in a Motorcycle Crash" WickedLocalNeedham.com, October 10, 2007

In the last issue we asked "How many faculty were in the original group hired to teach at Olin?" This was solicited a bit of controversy, but Joanne Pratt was the first to respond correctly guessing 8 (John Bourne, Diana Dabby, Steve Holt, David Kerns, Sherra Kerns, Joanne Pratt, Lynn Andrea Stein, and Brian Storey)
Trivia buffs, do you know...
Q: How many people attended Olin's very first Family Weekend event (including students)?
A: First person to respond to Alyson Goodrow with the correct answer receives a prize.
