Summer Book Suggestions Due by October 31

The Summer Book Program Advisory Committee is accepting suggestions for next summer's book.  The committee will consider four factors in reviewing your suggestions:  readability, lends itself to a Convocation discussion, relates to the Olin curriculum, and is available in paperback or at paperback price.  Suggestions (title, author and brief rationale) should be sent to Rod Crafts by Wednesday, October 31. The Summer Book Program is supported by the class gift from the Class of 2006. Mark your calendars now for next fall's Convocation on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium.

2007-2008 SCOPE Program
This year's SCOPE Program officially began on August 31. Teams were formed several days later and have since met with their sponsor companies to discuss individual statements of work for their projects. Here are five of the thirteen projects in a nut shell:

F.W. Olin: The team, advised by Jessica Townsend, will construct an energy efficient cooking stove to be used in third-world countries.

MITRE:
The team, advised by Mark L. Chang, is charged with answering the question “Is it possible to bridge both physical and virtual spaces to support effective collaboration/interaction among small teams?”

Nortel: The team, advised by Mark L. Chang, will investigate ways to utilize technology to bridge the generational gap between grandparents and their grandchildren to improve health and quality of life for seniors.

ROCONA-Tractor: The team, advised by Dave Barrett, will design a new, more robust, cost-reduced tractor and engage in field test operations in CA.

ROCONA- Biosensor: A strategic goal of this second collaboration with ROCONA is to produce a cost-effective, marketable analytical sensor system th at could be installed in a standard toilet and detect changes in the chemistry of a person's urine. The team will be advised by Alisha Sieminski.

Additional information will be available on other 2007-2008 projects in future editions of the Link!

It's on the Portal!
For the past several years, Olin College has used the Olin Community on Blackboard for posting items such as student jobs, Olin policies, forms and other items of interest. We have been working over the last few months to transition these items over to the Portal. IT, in conjunction with the Portal Working Group, would like to invite you to sign-on to the Portal for all your on campus needs. The Portal/PhoenixNet will provide you with access to the following:

  • Resource Links
  • Campus events
  • Academic information
  • Class lists, course schedules and grade inputing
  • Benefit information and other resources
  • Student Employment information

What does this mean for Blackboard?
This means that the Olin Community on Blackboard will no longer be accessible. Blackboard will continue to serve Olin as means to access course materials only.

How do I access the Portal?
To login into PhoenixNet, point your browser to https://my.olin.edu and enter your network credentials. Please contact helpdesk@olin.edu if you have difficulty accessing PhoenixNet.

I have feedback to give. Where do I send it?
As always, your feedback is always welcome at myolin@olin.edu .

And remember: It's on the Portal…

Speaking of the Portal... All are Encouraged to Update the Community Calendar

Both the Community and CORe Calendars can be found under the Campus Life tab on the portal. Most major campus wide events, such as holidays, Family Weekend, Expo presentations, etc. have already been posted to the Community Calender, but as the name implies we'd like to encourage the entire community to post their events here so that everyone knows what's happening around campus.

Student Employment Opportunities Posted to the Portal
Welcome back students! Please check out all listed student employment opportunities on PhoenixNet. You can access the student employment page via the Campus Life tab, a Student Employment link is posted in the left hand column of this tab.

The Walker School Needs Your Help!

The Walker School is undertaking a couple of IT initiatives, their IT department consists of two people and is on a very tight budget. This presents the opportunity for Olin students to get involved. Specifically, they are seeking help in development of a Microsoft SharePoint server and systems customized to their needs. The system will manage all student/staff records, have security that will comply with HIPPA, allow off campus access from affiliate organizations, tie the Walker School in Needham and Beacon High School in Watertown record keeping into one cohesive system. The other high priority project for Walker would be the further development of the Walker website. One project is a master calendar that could serve disparate audiences. The calendar data would include, school terms and holidays, major fund-raising events, board events, staff trainings, clinical meetings, etc. One idea that we had, was a calendar with a check list where a user could select the event types that they wish to view. We are also interested in adding some multimedia content to the site such as podcasts of some of our professional development seminars, or the Walker video. Additional information can be found here, along with contact information for the appropriate folks at Walker.
