On May 22, under a clear paneled tent, lined with flowering pots, under a bright blue sky in the Olin Oval, employees gathered for the first, formal appreciation and recognition luncheon. Forty-two members of the Olin community were recognized for their five or more years of hard work and dedication. Employees were presented with a beautiful personalized clock honoring their efforts in making Olin all that it is today. The College plans to make this an annual event. The Commencement Steering Committee welcomes your suggestions for the main speaker at Commencement '08. The Committee will make a recommendation to President Miller who, in turn, will forward a recommendation to the Board of Trustees. Given the challenges of scheduling potential speakers, it is very important that our decision be made in as timely a manner as possible. Therefore, the deadline for nominations is August 1.
Please keep in mind the multiple audiences at an Olin commencement students, parents, extended family members, alumni, Trustees, President's Council members, staff and faculty. Ideally, we are looking for someone with a connection to Olin, or to engineering and with a perspective that resonates with the values of Olin. We want her/him to be a good speaker, who will be able to convey a thoughtful message, and add to the special sense of community at this important Olin event.
Please submit your suggestions, with the candidate's name and a short rationale, to Rod Crafts, Dean of Student Life, or to the Office of Student Life, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Olin Way, Needham, MA 02492. Dean Crafts will collect nominations for review by the Committee.
A reminder that all open positions are posted on the Olin website. Please take a minute to review them and keep in mind that Human Resources is always looking for referrals from employees for open positions.

Chris Murphy '06 has embarked on a 40-day expedition to explore the Gakkel Ridge in the Arctic Ocean . Joining the team of scientists, technicians, and engineers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Murphy is participating in a potentially groundbreaking research cruise aboard the Swedish ice-breaker Oden. Murphy, an MIT grad student, helped to program and operate two autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) that were built specifically for this research endeavor.Researchers are excited by the possibility that what lies beneath the ocean floor of Gakkel Ridge may be different from what they’ve found in other oceans. The goal of the Gakkel Ridge expedition is to see if there are active hydrothermal vents present, to locate them, and to learn if these vents, and the communities of life around them, are unique. To learn more visit Olin's website.
