Next week is Spring Break for Olin College. Students should remember to take this time to relax so they are refreshed for the second half of the semester. Those who are staying should remember that the Dining Hall will be closed. Take advantage of the full kitchens in the dorms, but remember to keep them clean! Also, IT wants to remind students travelling away from campus to make sure that they have the latest VPN client and that your password hasn't expired. Additional VPN related information can be found on the IT web site.
Just a reminder that the 2007 Commencement website is live; please visit commencement.olin.edu for information regarding the schedule of events for the weekend, May 19-20th. Hotels in the area fill up fast, so make your reservations soon.
As announced in the last Link, this year's Big Conversations guest speaker will be MIT instructor Amy Smith. A winner of many awards for her innovations in technology for the third world, Professor Smith is making a difference in the lives of thousands of people the world over with the inventions she and her students create. See the event website for details on this exciting new installment in Olin's speaker series on "What's Important?"
The
schedule for final exams and evaluations for Spring 2007 is posted on the StAR website at http://star.olin.edu/studentrecords.cfm.
CORe is asking members of the Olin Community to update their personal profile on the portal so that students, faculty, and staff can get to know each other better. Pictures have been uploaded of everyone in the community (you can choose to modify or hide that picture, if you'd like). Please follow the instructions to customize your presence on the portal, and e-mail HelpDesk should you have any questions!
The cars are actually on campus, but the website needed to reserve the cars is still being created by Zip Car. As soon as this site is available, Olin community members will be able to join the Zip Car program. After signing up, a membership card will be mailed in 3-5 days. The card is needed to activate the car at the reserved time. The cars, a Mazda 3 and a Toyota Matrix, will be located in Lot A, tier 3. The signs for these reserved spots will be installed before the weekend. Once the site is up, reservations can be made online or over the phone and include gas, insurance, satellite radio, 24/7 roadside assistance, and parking. An announcement will be sent to the community when the website is available.
IT will be performing wireless network upgrades on Wednesday, March 21st beginning at 10:00am. This work will be service impacting, resulting in intermittent wireless network access for up to two hours. For additional information, please check the IT web site.
Olin's speaker series is open to the entire extended Olin community, so feel free to show up and enjoy hearing what great people think is important in life. Amy Smith has a wealth of experience to draw from through her work in the third world, and should be fascinating to hear.
Thanks to the twenty-one parents who volunteered to help with Olin's 2007 Candidates' Weekend. You were all a great help, and several parents of candidates mentioned that the Olin Parents Panel was the most informative or helpful event the whole weekend.
2007 Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day
Dee Magnoni will participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day that runs from August 3 - 5, 2007. She is walking in honor of friends and family that have fought this disease, and to help prevent future cases. The walk is 60 miles over the course of three days with thousands of participating women and men. The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment through Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
Dee must raise at least $2,200 in donations. If you'd like to help, donations can be made by visiting Dee's fundraising page at: http://www.the3day.org/boston07/deemagnoni.
According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, approximately 200,000 American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and nearly 40,000 will die from it. Let's help stop this disease!
Homegrown Coffeehouse
Hip, modern folk-rock that flies in the face of traditional boundaries, as fresh as Counting Crows and as memorable as Jefferson Airplane, returns to Needham. With their quirky close harmonies, thoughtfully constructed songs, and irresistible stage appeal, the Nields have been building a huge fan base over the past few years. Whether you are familiar with the Nields or have never heard of them, this is a show you won't want to miss. Katryna & Nerissa Nields at the Homegrown Coffeehouse, Saturday, March 24, at 8:00 P.M. "Overscheduled Children" Lecture at Beth-Israel Hospital
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham will present a lecture on “Overscheduled Children” on Monday, April 30, as part of its annual “Community Connections” health education series. The lecture will be presented by Andrea Masterman, Ph.D., a psychologist at Needham Psychotherapy Associates. Masterman will discuss how parents increasingly feel pressure to keep their children busy and are passing that pressure to a generation of overscheduled children. She will review the normal development tasks of childhood, the support children need during these stages and the impact an activity-laden schedule can have on children and other members of the family. There will be a question and answer period after the lecture. The 7-8 p.m. presentation, co-sponsored by Parent Talk and Needham Psychotherapy Associates, is free. It will be held in the Dickerson Room at BID-Needham, 148 Chestnut Street, Needham. Contact Margaret Pantridge for more information.

"Has the Promise of Blended Education Been Realized?," AScribe Newswire, March 12, 2007

In the last issue we asked "What is this year's Big Conversations speaker, MIT Instructor Amy Smith, best known for?" Pearl Donohoo was the first to respond with the correct answer of the Phase-Change Incubator, a device that allows health care workers without electricity to culture bacteria to identify which antibiotics to use in treating patients.
Trivia buffs, do you know.....
Q: Who was the first company/sponsor to fully sign on for an Olin SCOPE project?
A: First person to correctly respond to Andrew Bouchard receives a prize.
