ABET is Coming to Olin -- October 22-24
ABET evaluators will be on campus October 22nd thru October 24th to evaluate Olin's programs: Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Click here to review frequently-asked question regarding ABET and the upcoming campus visit.

SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, November 1st -- The Presidential Lecture Series on Leadership and Philanthropy Kicks Off with Ray Stata, Chairman of Analog Devices Presenting
Join us on November 1st at 11:00 a.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium to meet Ray Stata, a successful entrepreneur, CEO, philanthropist and spokesman for education reform. He is also a leading advocate for corporate practices that emphasize the human factors in business success. As the speaker at the inaugural Presidential Lecture Series on Leadership and Philanthropy, Mr. Stata, Chairman and CEO of Analog Devices, will present an interactive session on leadership, philanthropy and motivation.

Mr. Stata's accomplishments and career highlights include:

  • A graduate of MIT in electrical engineering;
  • Co-founder, in 1965, of Analog Devices, Inc., a designer, manufacturer and marketer of analog, mixed, and digital signal processing equipment. He has been chairman and chief executive officer since 1973;
  • Instituted the use of the “balanced scorecard” at Analog Devices, a multidimensional approach to measuring corporate performance that incorporates both financial and non-financial factors;
  • Helped establish the Center for Quality of Management (CQM) in 1989, a non-profit consortium of companies and universities exploring better ways to bring value to business operations through sharing information and pooling resources;
  • With wife Maria, provided major funding for the landmark Ray and Maria Stata Center at MIT;
  • A founder and first President of the Massachusetts High Technology Council and currently a member of MHTC's Board of Directors;
  • Since 1987 he has served on the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness, a body that addresses cutting-edge issues that drive our nation's ability to compete successfully in the global marketplace;
  • Prominent force in pushing technology into emerging nations like India, Africa, and in the Middle East with the goal of helping to bring the benefits of technology to the lives of the poorest people in developing countries.

SAVE THE DATE: Benefits Fair Thursday, October 26th
This year's Benefits and Wellness Fair for all faculty and staff of Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering will be Thursday, October 26th. The fair will be held at the Babson College, Knight Auditorium from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Free Flu Shots will be administered. Please note: detailed information regarding the 2007 Benefits Open Enrollment will be emailed to employees next week.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) -- Upcoming FWOP Performances
October 28th and 29th from 8:00-10:00 p.m. FWOP will present The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) in the Olin Auditorium. The production is a fast-action, hilarious comedy in which three actors attempt to perform all 37 of Shakespeare's plays in a single 90 minute sitting. This isn't the Shakespeare you studied in school with the troupe performing Titus Andronicus as a cooking show, Othello as a rap song, and even Hamlet backwards! This is a show that is absolutely hilarious whether you have seen Shakespeare or not. Tickets are $5 General Admission and $3 for Students and Senior Citizens. 7th Annual Rocket Pitch Event
On Friday, October 27 at the 7th annual rocket pitch event, 108 new venture ideas will be pitched, each in under three minutes. Come hear the nation's top entrepreneurship students and alumni pitch their new ventures. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with opening remarks and pitches starting at 8:45 a.m. A networking reception will follow the pitches. For more information and to register click here.

Chemistry for Kids -- National Chemistry Week
A day of free, science-related activities and a demonstration of fun scientific experiments will be held on Sunday, October 22nd from 11:00 a.m. to noon and again from 2:00-3:00 p.m., at the Wellesley College Science Center. Appropriate for kids in elementary school and older, the experiments will be presented by Bassam Shakhashiri, a professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 10:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the science center, volunteers will lead kids through a series of activities on the theme"Your Home: It's All Built on Chemistry." Activities range from making silly putty to the chemistry of nails. Tickets to the demonstration are available on a first come, first serve basis -- reservations are strongly recommended. To reserve tickets, please contact Marilou Cashman. Parking is free.

Reminder: Deadline is October 31st for the $100,000 Green Innovation Prize

The KPCB Prize for Green Innovation recognizes those creating substantial advancements in green technology. Any person, group, student organization, or company creating significant, sustainable innovation in green technology is eligible. The prize is a $100,000 award for the best technology or policy innovation that encourages innovation in sustainable, green growth. This may be innovation in green energy generation, storage, conservation, policy or any other field. A panel of five independent judges will select and announce the first winner during the 2nd annual Greentech Innovation Network Conference in early December. Click here for more information.
