A reminder that on October 14th the offices of Development, Parent & Alumni Relations, External Relations and the Parent Advisory Board, will host a silent auction of artwork as part of a reception in the Academic Center. The first two hours of the reception will be for Family Weekend participants only (4:00-6:00 p.m.) and the following two hours (6:00-8:00 p.m.) will include invitees from the communities of Dedham, Needham and Wellesley. All Olin students are invited to attend free of charge, and members of the community who donate artwork receive two free tickets for admittance. Planning is down to the wire and we welcome additional donated pieces of art (due to the development office by 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10th) and additional volunteers to help with the event itself. If you are interested in donating artwork or otherwise participating in the event please email development@olin.edu. Lastly, if you are planning to attend the event, please RSVP as soon as possible. We look forward to your joining us in making this inaugural Artwork in Autumn event a success!

October 14th from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in AC109 SERV will be leading two projects - prepping team-building activities, puzzles, or games for elementary and high school students and recording stories on CDs for disabled adults. Students, families, staff and faculty are encouraged to come help.
Business Week magazine has included Olin College on its first-ever list of the top design programs in the country. The eclectic list, which includes business schools, engineering schools and traditional design schools, was published in the Oct. 9 issue. The magazine notes that companies are increasingly looking for design talent to gain competitive advantage. The schools on the list emphasize multidisciplinary approaches, combining engineering, business and social sciences. They team teach, and organize students into teams as part of the learning process. Professor Brian Bingham recently earned three research grants totaling more than $250,000. Two of the grants were awarded by UCSB for his project on Submerged Olin in the Coal Oil Pt. Seep Field: Finding, Identifying and Tracking in a National Laboratory. The third grant was awarded by NOAA for MERC: Multi-Scalar Real-Time Environmental Characterization. Additionally, professor Yevgeniya Zastavker was awarded a grant by the NSF totaling more than $350,000 for RES: Does Project-Based Learning Matter to Undergraduate Women in Engineering? A study of Performance, Interests and Participation in Gateway Technical Courses.
October 13th from 8:00-10:00 p.m. FWOP will present its first production of the season in the Olin Auditorium. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare [abridged] is a fast-action, hilarious comedy in which three actors attempt to perform all 37 of Shakespeare's plays in a single 90 minute sitting. This isn't the Shakespeare you studied in school with the troupe performing Titus Andronicus as a cooking show, Othello as a rap song, and even Hamlet backwards! This is a show that is absolutely hilarious whether you have seen Shakespeare or not.
Olin is implementing a new anonymous incident reporting system entitled MySafeCampus® . This system will enable each of you to submit a report via the Web (www.mysafecampus.com) or by calling the toll-free number (800-461-9330) that is forwarded to a call center, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The fall semester foundation course in Creative Writing will be producing short films, reflecting on an individual in the Olin community and his/her favorite poem. The assignment is inspired by former poet laureate Robert Pinsky's national “favorite poem project” (www.favoritepoem.org). Have you ever “fallen in love” with a poem or felt influenced, even consoled, by a particular poem? If so, please let us know! Contact the Creative Writing class and provide us with the title and author of your favorite poem as well as the story behind your affinity for the poem. On October 9th from 12:00-4:00 p.m. on the Great Lawn, Open will host a silk-screening event where students can choose from 15 different designs to create their own silk-screened t-shirts. The 5th Annual Forum on Entrepreneurship and Innovation: Shaping Competitive Advantage will feature
five of Inc Magazine's top 30 Entrepreneurs under 30 years old. The forum will take place on October 13th at
the FW Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College. Sign up by Tuesday, October 10th to receive a $10 discount.
The Babson Toastmasters Club is dedicated to helping its members improve their communication skills by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Meetings are held every other Thursday at noon on the Babson campus, typically in the Blank Center. Michelle Abadia, soprano and her fellow performers, Cathy Grein, pianist and corporate tax consultant; and Stephen Schiffman, faculty member at Babson and Olin College, will perform works by Mozart, Schubert, Duparc, Cole Porter and some Spanish-language melodies with guitar accompaniment. The concert is a fund-raising event for Babson Global Outreach through Entrepreneurship whose mission is to help individuals in the developing world start businesses. In January, members of the group, including two Olin students, are going to Sri Lanka to invigorate the spirit of local entrepreneurs and help them create sustainable business models. The event is open to students, parents and all other community members. A $20 donation ($10 for students) will be requested upon entrance. Note: RSVP is not required for this event.

Habitat for Humanity selects winners in nine categories for its annual
National Awards program. The program is designed to recognize and encourage both youth and others who support youth involvement in productivity, innovation and creativity in the accomplishment of Habitat for Humanity's mission. Olin has won this year's Campus Chapter Clarence Jordan Award. Congratulations to the Habitat for Humanity team!
The KPCB Prize for Green Innovation
recognizes those creating substantial advancements in green technology. Any person, group, student organization, or company creating significant, sustainable innovation in green technology is eligible. The prize is a $100,000 award for the best technology or policy innovation that encourages innovation in sustainable, green growth. This may be innovation in green energy generation, storage, conservation, policy or any other field. A panel of five independent judges will select and announce the first winner during the 2nd annual Greentech Innovation Network Conference in early December. Click here for more information.
