The film chronicles the clash between tradition and modernization in a Senegalese village through the story of a woman who refuses to allow the “ritual purification” (female circumcision) of girls in her village. A major prize winner at the 2004 Cannes film festival, Moolaade brings contemporary Senegal, with all of its triumphs and conflicts, to vivid dramatic life. Films screened in the Carling-Sorenson Theater are made possible by the generous support of the Malcolm Stearns B ‘81 Memorial Film Society Fund.

“Push On To Save Science Center; Move To Nonprofit, Fund Drive Mulled,” By Lauren K. Meade, The Boston Globe, April 27, 2006
EXCERPT: Richard Miller, the president of the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, said he hopes that the schools can keep the Science Center open long enough for another override vote.

"There is no better way to learn about math and science than through experience," said Miller.

Miller said educators need to shake off the "geeky" image of math and science, promoting them instead as fields for creative minds.

Miller, a Needham resident, said no one has approached the college yet about collaborating to save the Science Center, though he said he'd have to consult the board of trustees before responding.

Olin in the past has been willing to collaborate with the schools. Olin students tutor Needham youngsters in math and science, and refurbish and donate computers to families who can't afford them, he said.

"Duke, Harvard Provide No Exemption From Ethics, Crime Probes," Bloomberg, April 26, 2006
EXCERPT: During a candidates' weekend at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts, a potential student talked about how much he was looking forward to partying and drinking when school started in September.

The student -- one of a select group invited to the exclusive engineering school, which pays full tuition for all who attend -- was immediately dropped from consideration as an applicant, says Duncan Murdoch, dean of admissions.

"The personal attributes of the candidate are as important as the academic power of the candidate."
