NEASC Visiting Team Finalized for April 9-12 Visit   
A team of educators will be on campus April 9-12 to review Olin for full accreditation by the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of NEASC. The college is excited to have this group to work with:    

  • Dr. Jon Strauss, President of Harvey Mudd College and Chair of the Visiting Team
  • Ms. Lorraine Atwood, Vice President for Finance and Administration,   Vermont Law School
  • Dr. Eleanor Baum, Dean of Engineering, The Cooper Union    
  • Dr. Craig McEwen, Dean of Academic Affairs, Bowdoin College    
  • Dr. Janet Begin Richardson, Vice President of Student Affairs, Worcester Polytechnic Institute    
  • Dr. Kim Vandiver, Dean of Undergraduate Research, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

While the visitors are on campus, they will be meeting with a variety of people within the community.  An open meeting for anyone in the community will also be scheduled. Olin has completed the Self Study for this visit. A pdf version of this document is available in the Public drive, in the NEASC 2006 folder. It would be great if everyone could take time to take a look at the Overview section -- if not the entire document. Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to bring this about.

The Tipping Point Selected for Summer Reading
Provost David Kerns has approved the recommendation of the Summer Book Program Advisory Committee to use Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference as the book for summer reading. Thanks to Committee members: Rebecca Christianson, Rod Crafts, Alex Davis '08, Ozgur Eris, Sara Marshall '07, Roberto Santana '09, Kathleen Towers '09 and Nikolaus Wittenstein '09. And thanks to members of the Olin community who recommended 29 books for the Committee's consideration. The Convocation on The Tipping Point will be held on Thursday, August 31, at 7 p.m. in the Olin Center Auditorium.  Suggestions for speakers or panelists may be forwarded to Rod Crafts, Alex Davis, Ozgur Eris or Kathleen Towers.

Chang Continues as Resident Scholar for 2006-07
The Office of Student Life is pleased to report that Mark Chang will continue next year as the College's live-in Resident Scholar. Mark and his wife Caryn put together several successful programs this year that aimed to bridge the “worlds” of academics and residence life. In addition to being a general resource to students, they plan to continue the Olin Technical Excellence for Community Service (TECS) project, which was started in the fall semester in conjunction with students from Foundations of Business and Entrepreneurship (AHSE 1500). They also look forward to continuing the Social Justice reading group which meets bi-weekly to explore the “renaissance engineer” through a variety of authors.

IT Tech Talk Presents Silicon Graphics Inc.
On Monday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. in AC 328 Silicon Graphics Inc. will host a technical presentation and demonstration for all who are interested. SGI will provide an overview of their products and technologies (high performance computing, visualization and storage), including Star-P Parallel MATLAB software and visualization demonstration with Viz3D.

For the last twenty years, SGI has been at the forefront of enabling engineering and scientific breakthroughs through its technology innovations, including:
  • Boeing designs entire airplanes digitally

2006 Hours 'Til Graduation Event a Blast
The Office of Parent and Alumni Relations and the Alumni Steering Committee held its first alumni event for seniors on Monday, February 27 to celebrate 2006 Hours 'Til Graduation at Roger's Pub (Babson). The turnout was great; 59 of the 66 seniors joined in the festivities. Many showcased their karaoke talents while others enjoyed the entertainment and the raffle, which included prizes from iTunes, Best Buy, Not Your Average Joe's and Sweet Basil. Many thanks to the committee (Kevin Tostado, Manny Amaral, Emily Roper, Andrew Bouchard, Christie Lee, Will Clayton and David Soo) and Jennifer Thomas for helping make the event a great success. Seniors who weren't able to attend the event and want a t-shirt should contact Krissy Raposa.

Showcase Your Business on Founders Day
The Babson College Student & Alumni Business Fair will be held Tuesday April 4, 2006 from 9-11:30 a.m. in Babson's Olin Hall. Come and showcase your business at Babson's Founders Day. Interact with students, alumni and veteran entrepreneurs at the same time you are promoting your business. The Student & Alumni Business Fair is hosted by the elite Babson Entrepreneurship Club in coordination with the Arthur M. Blank Center for Entrepreneurship. Free Legal Consultation Available to Business Owners
The Babson Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce a program that will give Olin and Babson business owners free legal consultation without ever having to leave campus. This great offer is being provided free by Morse, Barnes-Brown, Pendleton a prestigious New England law firm located on Route 128. These sessions will be offered 3 times during the semester and are open to any member of the Babson – Olin community.

To attend please come to the Small Conference Room in the Arthur M. Blank Center at 3:20 p.m. on March 1 or April 12 to be assigned a 30-minute time slot between 3:30–5:30 p.m. If you have a specific issue you are planning on asking about, please send it to chamber@babson.edu, which will ensure the lawyers come prepared to address your issue.

Martin Luther King Legacy Day - Save the Date of March 6
The following events will take place on March 6 in celebration of Martin Luther King Legacy Day:

  • Panel Discussion: Business, Katrina, and the MLK Jr. Dream: How Far Have We Really Come?, 12-1:30 p.m., Needham/Wellesley Room, Olin Hall
    An interactive discussion featuring Rick Presbrey, Executive Director, Housing Assistance Corporation and Major Susan Kelley, Corps. Officer, Salvation Army, among others.  Both Major Kelly and Mr. Presbrey were instrumental in coordinating efforts to shelter evacuees from Katrina at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod, and in relocating and resettling evacuees in the Massachusetts area. Bring your lunch to this interactive panel. Dessert and coffee will be provided.
  • Legacy Day Keynote Program, 5–6:30 p.m., Sorenson Theatre
    Speeches from the essay contest finalists, presentation of awards, presentation of the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award and a keynote address by Juan Williams, National Political Correspondent for National Public Radio, Fox Television and FoxNews Sunday and award-winning author.
  • MLK Jr Legacy Day Reception and Art Opening, 6:30–7:30 p.m., Sorenson Lobbies
    This exhibit will feature "Strange Fruit Hanging from the Tree of Life: Reflections on Bruno," by Artist, Kevin Sipp.
  • Artist's Talk: Kevin Sipp, 7:30–8:30 p.m., Sorenson Theater
    In his large sculptural installation, Atlanta-based artist Kevin Sipp recalls the death of Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno, burned alive by the Inquisition in 1600, as a point of entry into the long history of victims of injustice and intolerance the world over. Sipp's “memory tree” projects the sounds of prayers and laments for the lost, from Bruno to lynching victim Emmet Till, organized around the haunting anti-lynching song, “Strange Fruit.” This exhibition is sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Division and the Sorenson Center for the Arts in connection with Babson's Arts and Humanities Foundation course, “Challenging Boundaries: The Self in Art and Philosophy 1800 – 2006.”

Babson Hosts Hot Shot Basketball Night
On Tuesday, March 7 from 9-10:00 p.m. in the Staake Gymnasium Babson will host Hot Shot Night. No sign-up required, participants should just arrive ready to compete in free throws, three-point shots and a one-minute timed event. Each contest will have a male division and a female division with gift certificate prizes going to the winners.

Jujitsu Classes Offered at Chandor Studio
Free introductory Jujitsu classes in self-defense, confidence and safety are being offered at Babson's Chandor Dance Aerobics Studio. No sign-up is required. Just arrive ready with loose and comfortable clothing on Monday, March 6 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The Role of Women in Global Economic Development
The Center for Women's Leadership at Babson College and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston invite you to a forum for discussion on “The Role of Women in Global Entrepreneurship,” which will including findings from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2005 Report on Women and Entrepreneurship. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 7 from 10:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. in Knight Auditorium, Babson College. Upcoming Art Workshops for Eating Disorder Awareness Week
A Jeans Decoration Workshop will be held on Friday March 3 at Sorenson Rehearsal Studio from 3-5:00 p.m. Attendees should bring an old pair of jeans to transform into art by painting, drawing and sewing body-positive messages and images onto them. The jeans can then be displayed on a clothesline in Sorenson for the duration of the day's Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) events.

A Creative Media Literacy Workshop will also be held on Friday March 3 in Sorenson Rehearsal Studio from 3-5:00 p.m. Attendees will create artwork as a means of learning about media literacy. Make posters, drawings and collages that make a statement about negative advertising campaigns. No previous art experience required for any of the workshops. The artist in residence will guide workshop participants through the process. Art Supplies will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own photos, drawings, etc for integration into the artwork.

All Workshop Participants are invited to display their artwork from the workshops in the EDAW (Eating Disorder Awareness Week) art show on March 3. For more info, contact Danielle Krcmar, artist in residence at 781-239-5888.

Students Present at Greater Boston Anthropology Consortium Event
On Friday, March 10 three Olin students will present their work at the Third Annual Greater Boston Anthropology Consortium (GBAC) Student Conference. The event is a collaborative and co-sponsored by the anthropology programs of Brandeis University, Olin College, Tufts University and Wellesley College. Olin was added to this consortium recently.

The following Olin student presentations will take place in Tishman Commons, Lulu Chow Wang Center at Wellesley College:

• 1:55-2:10 p.m.: “Bridging Worlds: How Offline Relationships Affect Online Sociality in World of Warcraft,” by Drew Harry.
• 2:25-2:40: “Internet Meetups and Community,” by Sean Munson
