College Creates Administrative Council
The Olin College Administrative Council recently held its first meeting. Chaired by Provost David Kerns, the purpose of this new advisory body is to improve communication among all constituencies of the college, to enhance the execution of critical tasks and to provide a forum for the discussion of emerging issues. The initial meeting, which was attended by a broadly representative group of faculty and staff, included discussions of the accreditation effort and preparing the first class for graduation. Mail to the College Community
There will be no internal mail service or package delivery while the college is closed (12/26/05 – 1/2/06). Regular mail service will be provided through the end of the day on Friday (12/23) and resume on January 3. Mail will be picked up from the Needham post office on the mornings of 12/27, 12/28 and 12/30. If you need access to the mail on those days please contact Scott Slaboden prior to Wednesday (12/21). There will be no UPS/FedEx/DHL-Airborne deliveries to the college during this time.

Students studying away for the spring semester that want their mail forwarded need to provide Paul and Ed with preprinted address labels. Mail forwarding will begin 1/3/06 and will follow USPS standard rules.

Holiday Shopping Ideas from Olin Gear
Monday through Friday stop by the Olin Center, Suite 300 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to have a look at new (and old) Olin Gear products for your holiday gift-giving. MasterCard and Visa are accepted. Some new items include navy beanie hats, flannel pants, crewneck sweatshirts, ladies' light pink and blue t-shirts, leather bookmark, iron-on patch, Olin mouse pad and blue poly-carbonate sports water bottle.

Home for Little Wanderers - Coat Drive Next Week
The week of December 19, there will be a box in the Lobby of the Olin Center to collect new children's coats for the Home for Little Wanderers. Spread the holiday cheer and donate a new child's coat to this worthy cause. For more information contact Leslie Larocca at X2281.

February 2: Interviewing and Networking Workshop
An Interviewing and Networking Workshop will be held on February 2, 2006 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in AC 126. Richard Rodgers will hold an interactive session on creative job search strategies that give you the tools to get the job that's right for you. Topics will include assessing your professional priorities, presenting yourself effectively, and networking. Rodgers is the Vice President of Product Development at Medica Corporation in Bedford, MA and the Chair of the Boston Section of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers). He has over 20 years' experience in product development and project and business management. His background includes consulting for general industry, the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Bioengineering Institute (BEI), and various bioengineering companies in the Boston area.

IEEE Recognizes Olin Curriculum
Provost David Kerns recently received the 2005 IEEE Educational Activities Board Major Educational Innovation Award. The award, which recognizes Olin's academic program, honors Olin's development of "best practices in undergraduate engineering education in the USA and worldwide." The award was established by the IEEE to recognize individuals who have distinguished themselves for outstanding educational innovation in a field of interest. This award brings honor to Dave and the College.


New Faces
On January 3, 2006 the following adjunct faculty members will join the Olin community:
  • Trudy Wilcox – Adjunct Assistant Professor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Christina Shea – Adjunct Assistant Professor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
  • Paul Sabin – Adjunct Assistant Professor of Design for Manufacture.

Meet that Oliner…
This week's spotlight shines on the Assistant Director of Parent and Alumni Relations, Kristina Raposa. Since assuming her role with the Parent and Alumni Office in the spring of 2005, Krissy has been busy starting up the office, including producing a newsletter and handbook, managing list serves, databases, a website, Blackboard and appeals to college constituents. She also coordinates Family Weekend, helps with other special events and interacts with the Parent Advisory Board while assisting other External Relations initiatives.

KR: March 2003 

LINK: What is your favorite thing about your job?
KR: Working on teams with so many talented people -- from parents to students, staff and faculty.
