Olin College is engaged in many activities related to hurricane Katrina relief. Here is a short summary.
The Sloan Foundation announced in a recent press release a $1.1 million special grant that will be administered through Olin/Babson's Sloan Consortium to enable up to 10,000 students across the country to register for online courses at participating colleges and universities this fall. This will be made available at little or no cost to students affected by the hurricane. This effort has the potential to help thousands of students. For more information, visit http://www.sloansemester.org/.
Olin is participating with AICUM (Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts) to provide opportunities for appropriately prepared displaced engineering students who reside in Massachusetts to enroll at Olin this fall as special students, on a space available basis.
Olin is partnering with Wellesley and Babson to provide a similar opportunity to liberal arts and business students who wish to enroll at either of those colleges, and who need a room in our residence hall. Olin has also offered to help a displaced faculty member from the region.
For more information on resources available to students and institutions, visit http://www.campusrelief.org/.

Sullivan, Director of Spiritual Life at Babson College addressed a letter to the Babson and Olin communities regarding how community members and their families might get involved in Katrina relief efforts. The letter presents a variety of opportunities that are available locally. Click HERE to read the letter.
Olin College was included in the Princeton Review's 2006 edition of The Best 361 Colleges, which was published August 23. This is the second year in a row Olin has been included. For more information on Olin's listing, visit: http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/profiles/

IT is pleased to announce that Olin community members are now able to more conveniently add funds to their Dining and Convenience Dollar accounts through the web. This enables the use of the Olin ID card with some vending and all laundry machines, as well as dining in the cafeteria. Website visitors have the ability to view transaction history, report a lost card, and add funds to the account via a credit card. You may access the web site at: http://onlinecardoffice.com/olin. Further instruction on how to obtain authentication and use the web site is available in the documentation section of http://it.olin.edu.
The Board of Trustees requested that the College do quarterly budget analysis and fiscal year projection reporting. Budget managers should begin reviewing year-to-date activity using the Jenzebar Budget Review function. If you need help with Budget Review, please contact Tricia Benson at extension 2422. The Budget office will send out Budget Analysis worksheets to Vice Presidents and Deans by October 5; the completed worksheets should be sent back to Zhaopeng Ji no later than October 14. If you have any questions or need assistance with your analysis or forecasting, please feel free to contact Zhaopeng.Ji@olin.edu.
The College is currently seeking qualified candidates for several positions*. Employees are reminded that HR is always happy to accept referrals.
* Olin currently has a need for a temporary, part-time administrative assistant for the Provost Office. The individual will be covering for a maternity leave beginning mid-September; the hours are flexible. Please send any referrals directly to Pat Berardi (781-292-2429).
OIR would like to remind everyone that information about OIR, assessment, research, grants, and basic facts about Olin are available on the OIR Website at: http://Oir.olin.edu. Information on OIR and Eureka grants, which provide seed money for innovative projects at Olin, is available on the site.
A new addition is the Olin Basic Facts section. This includes basic information on many aspects of life at Olin and provides a single location for basic information such as enrollment, majors, number of faculty, staff, basic financial information, etc. Please check here first if you need basic facts. This will be updated on a regular basis by OIR (3-4x a year). Thanks to the many other offices that provided this data.
Suggestions, comments and questions about the OIR website and the basic facts document should be sent to Ann Schaffner. A printable copy of the current version of Basic Facts is attached for your convenience.
* Community Calendar Changes
The Olin Community Calendar, which includes information on all community events, is no longer a moderated document. You can now post your events directly to the calendar, instead of waiting to have them “approved.” This change should make the document easier to use and update. As most of you know, the community calendar is used to help in scheduling events and keep community members informed of on-campus events and guests. Even those events not open to the entire community should be listed on the calendar, as it prevents overlap and aids community members who may be called upon to help a lost guest to an event, etc. If the event is closed, just note it in the calendar posting.
The Community Service and Club Fair is happening today – Friday, September 9 – from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Oval. All staff and faculty are welcome to attend and be a part of the festivities. Staff and faculty are welcome to sign up to participate in any community service project.
The next Big Conversations will be held Wednesday, November 2. The goal of Big Conversations is to bring the Olin community together for a discussion of “what's important” with a guest speaker who has made an impact on the world. Some previous Big Conversations speakers include Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, John Abele, founder of Boston Scientific, and Michael Brown, president and co-founder of City Year. More information about the speaker and the day's schedule will be forthcoming.
Career Initiatives Day is Olin's daylong event, for students in all classes to explore possible careers and to prepare for a rewarding life after Olin College. There will be a mini-job/internship fair with participants including, BBN Technologies, Nortel Networks, Raytheon, Bose, the CIA and iRobot among others. A full schedule will be available soon.

Olin College acknowledges the following five year service anniversaries, which took place this summer, Mary Fitzpatrick (July) and Rod Crafts (August). In September faculty members John Bourne, Diana Dabby, Stephen Holt, Joanne Pratt, Lynn Stein and Brian Storey celebrate five years with Olin College.
Christopher Morse joined the Olin College faculty on September 1 as Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry. His office is located at OC 329. Alisha Sieminski joined the Olin College faculty on September 1 as Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering. Her office is located at OC 331.
On August 15, Patricia Blanchette became the Assistant Director of Admission. She grew up in Boston and attended Boston College. She received a M.A. from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Theology from Harvard. Most recently she completed her Ph.D. at the University of California Santa Cruz where she was a teaching assistant and provided personal and academic guidance to orphaned students attending UCSC. She has also taught at the Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School for gifted secondary school students. Her interests lie in providing opportunities for under represented minority groups in engineering. Patricia's office is located in the admission suite.
Paul Comerford joins Olin as Facilities Supervisor, responsible for daily services on day and night shifts. Paul comes to Olin from the Town of Needham, where he was the Assistant Director of Facilities for the past five years. In this position he was responsible for the custodial services for eight schools and six municipal buildings. He is a graduate of Dublin Institute of Technology in Dublin, Ireland. Paul lives in North Attleboro with his wife Kathleen and four children. His office ext. is

The Link is launching a new section, “Meet that Oliner,” which provides information on a featured Olin community member. Our first spotlight shines on Susan “Susie” Johanson, Assistant to the Dean of Admission. Susan's primary responsibility is supporting Dean of Admission Duncan Murdoch, and the Admission office. LINK: When did you start working at Olin?
SJ: I knew I was coming to Olin College in December 1999. My office at that time was in the foyer of Curie House. Five years later, I am still amazed by this gem.
LINK: What is your favorite thing about your job?
SJ: My job involves working with talented, lively and committed people who value education and each other highly. The vitality, sensitivity and genuine good naturedness of the entire community make working at Olin a pleasure.
LINK: How do you spend your spare time?
SJ: I love being home with my husband Marshall, our Australian shepherd Riley, and Otis, a petite orange tabby cat with a big personality. We have a flock of young chickens that may soon produce eggs; it has recently become obvious, however, that a few of them are roosters! I sing in a local choral group, take yoga and have been a Red Cross platelet/plasma/white blood cell donor for over twenty years. (I became
aphaeresis
participant before some of you were born!). I treasure my friends and love music, reading, animals, the ocean and New England's seasons.

In the last issue we asked you to identify the two community members in childhood photos. The two pictures were of (1) Mary Fitzpatrick and (2) Leslie Larocca. Sara Schwalbenberg ('06) was the first to correctly respond and she will receive Olin gear for her correct response.
Olin trivia buffs, September 17 is Constitution Day, in (pre)celebration of this day, do you know…
Q: Who said the following: “Science is my passion, politics my duty.”
A: First person to correctly respond to Jennifer Thomas receives a prize.
