22nd Annual Mathematical Problems in Industry Workshop comes to Olin College: June 12-16, 2006
The Mathematical Problems in Industry (MPI) Workshop is a lively five-day workshop which begins with industrial representatives presenting their current or existing problems to the group of attendees. For the rest of the week, the workshop participants break into small working groups consisting of senior faculty and attending scientists, students, and the industrial representatives, to discuss and tackle the problems in an informal setting. On the last day of the workshop, an academic representative from each group presents the results obtained and discusses possible future directions. A written report detailing the progress made during the workshop is prepared subsequently and sent to the industrial representatives.

More information can be found at: http://projects.olin.edu/mpi2006/. Contact Burt Tilley if you any questions.

They are both thrilled about the offers, and are keeping their options open by also considering other opportunities.

S.C.O.P.E. Program Prepares for September Launch
Olin's Senior Consulting Program for Engineering (SCOPE) will launch its inaugural year in September. SCOPE is the culminating educational experience for all senior students and it also fulfills an ABET requirement. During this year-long program, students will work in project teams to develop solutions to professional engineering, design and development projects. Corporate partners will supply the problems and the financial support needed to fund the program's activities. In return, student teams will be expected to analyze the problem, develop a plan and see it through to fruition. All of this will be done according to best professional practices and will be assessed according to very high standards.

Preparations for this program began over a year ago when the Dean of Faculty, Michael Moody, appointed David Barrett, Ph.D., Associate Professor for Mechanical Engineering as the first Director of the SCOPE Program. Since then, much has been done to ensure that the program has the policies, procedures, and structures needed for the September launch. There have been a series of meetings with both internal and external constituents on a regular basis. David Barrett, along with faculty and administrators, has visited the companies of many potential corporate partners and also welcomed them to campus. Throughout the college, offices have enthusiastically offered their support and help in building the infrastructure needed to successfully implement this program. The SCOPE Committee (D. Barrett, T. Dunphy and M. Moody) and the SCOPE faculty advisors have been meeting to define the various details of this program including the development of the schedule of events (see below).

There is a great deal of excitement about this program and it is hoped that the entire community will consider participating by attending the weekly design reviews scheduled each Tuesday from noon-1p beginning in mid-October.

Watch the Link for additional SCOPE updates once the recruiting process for this year's corporate sponsors comes to and end and the details of all the projects are finalized.

Olin College Softball Team Undefeated
The Olin College faculty/staff softball team kept its winning streak alive, defeating the Babson faculty team 13-12. The team's defense was led by the pitching of Rod Crafts, as well as a solid performance at first base by Mary Fitzpatrick and agile outfielder Jeff Stern. The offense was boosted by a Brad Lovas homerun in the second inning and solid hitting by Linda Canavan who went three for three, as well as great contributions from Keith Bourne (wife Kayla was excellent behind the plate as catcher), Duncan Murdoch (first game without an injury!) and Andy Moutinho. The team had a great season.
