Articles of Interest “Olin Named a ‘Best Value College',” By Valentina Zic, Needham Times, June 2, 2005 EXCERPT: “I think advertising the full-tuition scholarship certainly gets their attention," said Dean of Admissions Duncan Murdoch. "That creates a great deal of curiosity and has given us high visibility around the country very quickly.” The prospect of a full-tuition scholarship certainly piqued the interest of some current Olin students. Free tuition played a role in getting me interested in the college," said Alex Davis, who just completed his freshman year. But it generally wasn't what tipped the scale for most college entrants. For Mel Chua, who just completed her sophomore year, the people were the draw. “Olin tends to attract the happy, funny kind of engineer,” Chua said. She had heard about the 3 a.m. homework parties from a high school classmate who was a year ahead of her at Olin and thought those sounded fun.... “Local Students Win National Honor,” By Jessica Seda, New Jersey Herald, June 6, 2005 Trivia In the last issue we asked what college first called the town of Needham "home." Leslie Larocca was the first to correctly answer Wellesley College, which was founded in 1870 when the town of Wellesley was still part of West Needham. Here's a bit of Needham history for everyone: “Needham suffered a setback in its growth in April 1881, when West Needham was granted permission by the General Court to separate from Needham and form the new town of Wellesley. Their successful petition was the seventeenth attempt to effect this separation, reflecting long-standing disputes between the two sections of town that dated back into the late 1700s. The separation reduced the land and population of Needham by about half.” Leslie will receive Olin gear for her correct response. Olin trivia buffs do you know... Q: When was the Olin College groundbreaking held? A: First person to correctly respond to Jennifer Thomas receives a prize. |
