On April 20, Dr. Donald McCabe will speak in the Olin College auditorium from 12:00 -1:00 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to come help kick off the first Annual Honor Code Values and Ethics Speaker.
Dr. McCabe 's research was especially helpful during the development of Olin's Honor Code and he is now returning to see how it has evolved. In addition, Dr. McCabe will speak with interested faculty/staff members and with the Honor Board in two special sessions. RSVP to Nick Tatar if you would like to attend one of these sessions.
Dr. McCabe has published in a number of education, sociology and ethics journals. His areas of expertise include college education, ethical development and ethical decision making and cheating in college. In his speech, Dr. McCabe will discuss ethics and decision making. When a student sees or hears about a friend cheating, what are they most likely to do? When a student sees someone abusing alcohol or drinking when they are under-age, what should they do? Should a student take a job with a company that doesn't create environmentally or socially conscious products? How much community service is enough?
Dr. McCabe is a professor of management and global business at Rutgers University and the founder of the Center for Academic Integrity.

The entire Olin community is invited to an open house at East Hall on Friday, April 29 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Take the opportunity to tour the newest addition to the campus. Students can check out all of the spaces before room draw for next year.
Please note that this event is still somewhat tentative. We will make the final decision on whether to have the open house as we get closer to the date. Many areas of the building are almost completely finished while a few still have significant work remaining. We will need to cancel the event if we cannot be sure of providing a safe environment for everyone. However, we are currently confident that the building will be completed enough to have the open house.

On March 31, Olin sophomores Nathaniel Smith and Zachary Brock earned top honors in the Babson College 2005 John H. Muller Jr. Undergraduate Business Plan Competition with their plan for Wildfire Inc., a company that makes meeting management software. The sophomores teamed up with Babson undergraduates to write the business plan and claim the Muller Prize and $5,000. Olin College was recently selected to participate in a multiyear study of experiments aimed at innovation and excellence in undergraduate education funded by the Spencer Foundation. The study group will be known as the Forum for Excellence in Higher Education, and is led by Professor Richard Light of Harvard University. Participation in this group is by invitation only, and includes the following institutions: Amherst, Bowdoin, Davidson, Duke, Georgetown, Haverford, Harvard, M.I.T., Macalester, Middlebury, Olin, University of California-Merced, Wellesley and Williams. The study is funded for at least four years, and should provide an opportunity for Olin to obtain advice and counsel from some of the best educators in the country during our experimentation with new ideas. It will also provide the opportunity for the best of Olin's ideas to be reviewed and possibly adopted at much larger campuses, thereby potentially inspiring innovation in the larger context of higher education, as identified in the long-term aspiration in Olin's strategic plan.
Olin students Alex Epstein, Amy Holbrook and Jon Cass (Team H+) and Nicole Hori, Andrew Bouchard and Laura Stupin (the Flaming Sparrows) competed in the Needham Spelling Bee April 7. Although they didn't win, both teams did make it to the final round. Team H+ won't be forgetting the word “gnomon” any time soon, and the Sparrows will remember “pursuivant” for a long time.
On April 4, Jeff Stern joined the Olin community as the Media Services Technician. His office is located in the IT Suite in the Lower Level of the OC.
Emily Cullen also joined the Olin team on April 4. She was hired as a temporary Circulation and Library Assistant to assist Dee Magnoni. Emily's office is located in the library.
Prior to joining Olin, Emily worked at the Needham Free Public Library as a Library Assistant focusing on patron services and circulation. She earned her B.S. in zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and her M.A. teaching from Boston University. She has taught in and out of the traditional classroom setting. Emily's interest in libraries grew from all the enjoyable hours and hours she spent in various libraries studying, socializing, researching, preparing for teaching and relaxing with a great book. At home Emily enjoys her time chasing around her toddler daughter. She also enjoys going to markets and yard sales with her little one and husband.
