Professor Spence Co-Hosts Cryptology Talk

The event will take place Thursday, March 3 from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. at Babson College in Olin Hall, room 220.

Ever wonder how websites such as eBay and PayPal keep your financial information private? Curious about why your CD player can still play CDs with small scratches? Cryptology and coding theory hold the keys to these secrets. Cryptology is the science of making and breaking secret codes, and coding theory is the study of correcting errors that occur when data are transferred. In this talk, Professors Spence and Prichett will introduce you to some basic ideas used in these fascinating areas, intrigue you with a couple of stories surrounding cryptology used in WWII, and maybe even convince you to take our introductory cryptology and coding theory course next fall. Please join us for refreshments and discussion after the talk.

“Olin Foundation Gives Away Its Last Cent and Shuts Down,” By Erin Strout, The Chronicle of Higher Education, February 25, 2005
EXCERPT: One of higher education's most generous benefactors is calling it quits. The F.W. Olin Foundation has given away more than $800-million over almost seven decades, most of it to colleges and universities…In 1997 the foundation decided to use its remaining assets to create the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Since then it has pumped a total of $460-million into the college, putting it on a firm financial footing. The foundation is no longer needed, its directors say. Its final grant, $30-million, will pay for scholarships and a gift-matching program at the college.

Trivia
In the last issue we asked you what the Olin Corporation's main lines of business are today. Dan Lindquist was the first to correctly answer brass, Winchester (ammunition) and chlor alkali products (chlorine and caustic soda). Dan will be receiving Olin gear for his correct response. Olin trivia buffs do you know...

Q: Who was the first current student to apply to Olin College?

A: First person to correctly respond to Jennifer Thomas receives a prize.
