“Olin Foundation Gives Away Its Last Cent and Shuts Down,” By Erin Strout, The Chronicle of Higher Education, February 25, 2005 EXCERPT: One of higher education's most generous benefactors is calling it quits. The F.W. Olin Foundation has given away more than $800-million over almost seven decades, most of it to colleges and universities…In 1997 the foundation decided to use its remaining assets to create the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Since then it has pumped a total of $460-million into the college, putting it on a firm financial footing. The foundation is no longer needed, its directors say. Its final grant, $30-million, will pay for scholarships and a gift-matching program at the college. Trivia
