As we strive together to invent and constantly improve Olin College, the struggle to grasp the growing breadth of simultaneous activities here becomes more challenging each year. The increasing number of people and the growing number of committees and issues is remarkable. The way in which we have organized ourselves to address emerging issues -- and the high percentage of our community involved in them -- offers important insights into our developing culture, and also provides practical information on how you can find out what is going on here and who is involved. Staying informed as a community is a growing challenge, but a necessary part of preserving and growing the Olin College culture of community involvement and continual improvement. We all came here to 'write on the blank slate,' but at this point in time quite a lot has already been written for us. To help you stay abreast of this rapidly developing frontier, I want to call your attention to a good faith effort to assemble an up-to-date list of committees that is now available, along with a list of suggested committee etiquette guidelines. Both will also become available on the Community Organization on Blackboard for reference throughout the year. I encourage each of you to take a few minutes to review this list, to help us keep it up to date by sending any updates to Krissy Raposa, and, if you are serving on a committee, to continue to communicate your work to the community.
As previously announced in the Link, there will be a special meeting for all College staff members on Wednesday, December 15, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium. President Miller and VP Stephen Hannabury will provide an overview of the College's overall financial state and our projections for the next few years. This will not be a budget meeting about the College's detailed expenditures; rather, it is an opportunity to ask high level questions and frame issues that will improve the Olin community's participation in financial planning and management.
The Faculty/Staff Meeting (“Frankly Gathering”) originally scheduled for December 1 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, January 19, 2005, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. More information about this meeting will be forthcoming. Please mark your calendars.
Rick and Beth Miller invite you and a guest to join them for an Olin Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 12 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. The event will be held at their home on 4 Southwood Lane in Needham. Please send your RSVP (your best guess) to Christine Kelly by Monday, December 8.
The Office of Communication has developed an Event Communication Form to help identify your needs in communicating your event details to the community. Please complete the form in advance of your event and send it to Announcements@olin.edu. The form is located on Blackboard under the "Forms" tab and also in the "Communication Department" folder.
The College is currently seeking qualified candidates for several positions. Employees are reminded that HR is always happy to accept referrals.
Is there some question about the college you'd like answered? There are two ways you can send your questions about Olin College, or suggestions for improvement. You can e-mail questionbox@olin.edu, or write a note on forms provided and place them in the Question Box on the mezzanine level of the Olin Center. Someone will research the answer to your question, and a response will be e-mailed, or posted on the Question Box, within two weeks.
Do you have an interesting idea for a co-curricular offering? Would you enjoy sharing one of your hobbies with a few Olin students next semester? There were more than 340 “enrollments” in the 27 co-curriculars offered last spring and this fall. Since students are limited to no more than two such “enrollments,” a high percentage of students participate in this unique program. Brief descriptions and proposed budgets are due to Rod Crafts by December 9. Please send questions or suggestions to Rod.
“What Do You Do Now, and How Did You Get There?” is the theme of a guest panel to be held on Monday, December 6, from 6:30 - 7:45 p.m. in AC 109. The panel is sponsored jointly by the Olin SWE Chapter and the Office of Post Graduate Planning. Three guest panelists, Dr. Bruce Carvalho, Director of Engineering for Living MicroSystems, Dr. Norman Sheppard, Jr., Director of Advanced Product Development for MicroCHIPS, Inc., and Dr. Erica Smith-Adaline, Senior Research Scientist II at Wyeth Research will discuss their careers in bioengineering and the educational and professional choices they've made. Olin students in any major may find the discussion valuable, and all members of the Olin community are invited to participate.
Olin's first ever service auction will be held on Friday, December 10 from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the dining hall. SERV is sponsoring this service auction. The proceeds will go toward supporting members of the Olin community in their community service. Come show your support and bid on the various services that members of the community will be offering up, such as babysitting, manual labor, tutoring, homemade cookies, and dinner party catering. If you have any questions, or would like to offer a service to be auctioned, please email volunteer@olin.edu.
On December 7, Dr. Kaveh Pahlavan, professor of ECE and director of the Center for Wireless Information Network Studies at WPI will present an “Overview of Wireless Networks.” In his lecture, Dr. Pahlavan will discuss the cellular telephone and broadband wireless local networking industries.
On December 14, Clive Thompson will present “The Art of Play.” During his talk, Mr. Thompson will be discussing the increasing importance of ludology -- the study of play -- in today's society. Mr. Thompson writes about science and technology regularly for the New York Times Magazine, Wired, and New York magazine. He is the video-game columnist for Slate, and covers finance for Details, the men's magazine

On Friday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. the regular Shabbat service will take place in the Glavin Family Chapel. The service is casual, trans-denominational and led by Rabbi Doug Weber. The service begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. and concludes by about 6:45 p.m. This will be the final Shabbat service before the next semester begins.
December 7 from 8:30-9:30 p.m., Babson Hillel will host a Hanukkah party. The party, which will be held in Reynolds Hall, room 241 will feature, latkes and other appropriate snacks for the first night of Hanukkah, and of course, lighting of Hanukkiot (the correct Hebrew plural; most folks just say “menorah”). There may be some singing and the like. The event should prove to be a fun break amid the end of semester blues. All are invited to both events. Please feel welcome to do so.
On December 6, the Founder and CEO of Marquis Jet Partners, Bill Allard will speak in the Olin Hall auditorium at Babson College about his successful career. Allard, a Babson College alumnus who launched Marquis Jet Partners in 2002, will present a talk entitled “Tales From a High-Flying Start-Up.”
On Wednesday, December 8 at 4:30 p.m., the Glavin Family Chapel will host “Christmas Vespers.” The event will feature lessons and carols, and a special performance by members of the Babson and Olin communities. Community members and their families are welcome to attend.
November 29-December 17, Public Safety will be sponsoring their annual Toys for Tots drive at Babson and Olin Colleges. Through the years the Office of Public Safety has been pleased with the response to this program and invites everyone to make the holidays special for a deserving child by dropping off a new, unwrapped toy in one of the collection bins located in the Olin Center or Campus Center.
Once again, Chief Jackson invites you to trade a ticket for a toy. If you received a parking ticket for a violation other than parking in a handicap space or a fire lane, between November 17 and December 17, the ticket will be voided when you present a new, unwrapped toy with a value of at least half of the parking fine. Please note that during this period, only one ticket per person, will be invalidated upon the donation of a toy.
Many people do not realize that the United Parcel Service (UPS) donates their trucks to pick up the toys from drop off locations. Last year UPS sent two trucks to Babson to transport toys to the U.S. Marine Reserves for distribution.
On Tuesday, December 7 at 7:45 p.m. everyone is invited to listen to orchestral works by Schubert and Haydn and holiday favorites from the Nutcracker of Tchaikovsky performed by the Babson Olin Chamber Ensemble and selections from the Liebeslieder waltzes of Brahms performed by the Olin Vocal Ensemble. The event, which will take place in the Sorenson Theater, will feature a sing-a-long of favorite Christmas carols, hot cider, and cookies. Admission is free.
