The recently approved Competency and Portfolio System necessitates a few changes in the academic calendar for 2004-05. Please note the change in the order of events at the end of each semester. This new calendar replaces the calendars printed in the Student Handbook 2004- 05 and the Parents' Handbook 2004-05. Updated calendars are linked to the College web site under the Student Life tab. On September 2, the Convocation on the summer reading assignment – Phantoms in the Brain – attracted 134 students, five staff members, and one faculty member. Panelists were Robert Sekuler, Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Brandeis University, and Christopher Moore, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT. Alison Lee '07 served as moderator. Thoughtful questions and general enthusiasm for the Olin College Summer Book Program highlighted the evening. Suggestions for the 2005 Summer Book Program should be sent to Rod Crafts by October 29. Please include the title, author and rationale.
During the month of August construction continued on the East Hall roof, exterior and interior wall framing, sheathing and air/vapor barrier installation, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, sprinkler, tel/data rough-in and stairways. The installation of the hot and chilled water, electric, emergency electric, fire water and tel/data underground pipes and duct banks was completed. The Faculty/Staff Meeting Committee has determined the dates for the 2004-05 “Frankly Gathering” meetings. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 1, 2004, from 11-noon and Friday, April 1, 2005 from 3-4 p.m. The tech-savvy among you can drag these dates to your personal Outlook calendars from the Community Calendar, where they have been posted. The meeting is open to all faculty and staff. Students may attend as observers.
The Faculty/Staff Meeting Committee is seeking two members to join the committee. The charge of the committee is to plan and run the twice-yearly “Frankly Gathering” meetings, and implement other initiatives aimed at improving internal communication at Olin. Please contact Joe Hunter if you are interested in joining this fun group, and he will talk you into it.
The Boston Consortium has released its fall 2004 Course Calendar. Participants must register for all courses at least two weeks in advance to guarantee a space. Cancellations must be received two weeks before the workshop, or payment will be expected if your seat is not filled. Enrollment size is not listed on the website. Daphne Houlihan of TIAA-CREF will be on the Babson College campus to conduct individual counseling sessions for all Olin and Babson faculty and staff. The available appointment times for Tuesday, September 14 include 8:45 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 4:15 p.m. Sessions will take place in Babson's Office of Human Resources, Nichols Hall. Diane Bolden from Fidelity Investments will be on the Babson College campus to conduct individual counseling sessions for all Olin and Babson faculty and staff. A candle will be lit in the Glavin Family Chapel throughout the day on Friday, September 10, to honor those who lost their lives in the attacks in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. All are invited to stop by the Chapel to pray, meditate, or simply observe a moment of silence.

Career Initiatives Day is a daylong event for Olin students, dedicated to thinking about and preparing for career and life opportunities. This year, George Hatsopoulos, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Pharos, LLC, will be the keynote speaker. Workshops include those designed to help choose a major, apply to graduate school, learn about the experience of previous Olin student interns and researchers, consider other-than-engineering career alternatives, write a resume, learn about scholarship and fellowship programs such as the Rhodes Scholarship, and more. Guests from Battelle Natick, BBN Technologies, Bose, Boston Scientific, Intel Massachusetts, MITRE, Natick Soldier Center, Raytheon and others will be available to discuss internship opportunities.

On Monday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. Bryan Alexander will speak in the Olin Center auditorium on blogging, the social software movement, and basic network theory recent applications. Mr. Alexander will be speaking as part of the Tech Talk series sponsored by Information Technology. He is co-director of the Center for Educational Technology at Middlebury College, where he researches and develops programs on the advanced uses of information technology in liberal arts colleges. His specialties include digital writing, weblogs, copyright and
intellectual property, information literacy, wireless culture and teaching, project management, information design, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He maintains and contributes to a series of weblogs, including NITLE Tech News and Smartmobs, when not creating digital learning objects. A Ph.D. graduate of the University of Michigan, he has also taught English and information technology studies at Centenary College.
The Office of Innovation and Research (OIR) is accepting proposals for research and innovative initiatives. The majority of OIR's funds will be awarded in October for proposals submitted by September 30. The remaining funds will be available as “Eureka” grants throughout the year to support inspirational ideas. OIR encourages all community members to discuss ideas and proposals with them at any time. The Olin Seminar Series released a new website, http://projects.olin.edu/seminar/. The website includes information on all past and future speakers. The next seminar, which is slated for September 15, will feature Dr. Jan Lammerding, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Lammerding will present his talk, "Quantitative Analysis of Subcellular Biomechanics and Mechanotransduction” in the auditorium. The Information Technology department has planned a Drop-In on Friday, September 17 to give community members an opportunity to meet the newest members of the IT team. Recent additions to the IT team include Judith Cohen, ERP systems manager, Michael Horne, network engineer, and Kimberlee Round, associate director application development. The event will take place in the IT Suite (Olin Center Lower Level Ste LL10) from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

The Office of Spiritual Life at Babson College invites the Babson and Olin communities to join a Buddhist Gathering. The weekly gatherings began Sunday, September 5 and will continue on the first Sunday of month throughout the academic year. The group will gather from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Glavin Family Chapel for refreshments and a short religious service followed by discussion and meditation. This gathering will be led by a Buddhist priest from NY Buddhist Vihara. It would be helpful for the group to know how many are coming so, attendees are encouraged to call Beverly at x5623 in advance.

All classes take place in Sorenson Visual Arts Center, Trim 221 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The $50 fee includes all instruction, materials, and tools. An opportunity to take your sketching talents and transfer them to clay. Students will use a variety of carving surfaces (linoleum, wood, etc) to create relief designs which can be fired and glazed.

Thursdays, September 16 - December 2 (skips Thanksgiving week)
A sculpture course using various hand building methods (coil, slab, pinch, and mold) to design and construct clay forms. These forms may be based on the figure, architecture/ art history or nature. Carving methods, texture, surface treatment, color, and glaze techniques will be demonstrated.
The Trim 221 ceramic studio is open to Babson and Olin students, staff and faculty with experience in ceramics who wish to continue working in clay on their own. The $50 fee includes access to all materials and equipment during open studio hours and consultation with instructors by appointment. The fee is payable in advance at the Sorenson office in Park Manor South. The studio is open this fall (starting September 19) on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

Step – Monday (9/13 start date)
A dynamic, non-stop workout designed to give every participant a cardiovascular challenge. A variety of step combinations as well as power movements may be added to increase intensity and add excitement. Abs conclude.
Power Pilates – Tuesday (9/7 start date)
This mat workout class will transform your body/mind by improving your core strength, posture, and flexibility and by strengthening chronic weaknesses. Get results through this series of Pilates basic – an energetic, feel good hour.
Kickboxing – Wednesday (9/8 start date)
This fun, intense, high-impact workout incorporates upper and lower body muscle groups with punching and kicking drills. The class provides an overall body toning experience. Abs exercises and weight training is often included.
Zumba – Thursday (9/15 start date)
Latin style dancing merges with low-impact aerobics to create this fat-burning, sweat drenching, cardiovascular workout. Quite possibly the most fun you ever will have in a workout. All levels welcome.

On August 23, 2004, Annie Vinik joined Olin as the graduate intern for Study Away planning. Her office is in CC 318 and her extension is 2335. Students interested in studying away next semester need to meet with her by October 1 and applications are due to her by October 15.
On September 1, Paul DiMilla joined the Olin community as a visiting professor of Bioengineering. His office is located in OC 327 and his extension is 2544. Dr. DeMilla is teaching Topics in Bioengineering this fall and contributing to the development of Olin's bioengineering program.
Kim Round will join the Olin community on Monday, September 13 as associate director of Information Technology. Her office is located in OC LL14 and her extension is 2435.
