Quarterly Update from the Office of Innovation and Research (OIR)

  • NASA funded student research program this summer:
The Office of OIR is excited to report that NASA awarded Olin the opportunity to conduct a research study this summer. In conjunction with this summer research, Olin is exploring the possibility of developing a long-term working relationship with NASA's Space Science Enterprise program. Once established, this program would allow Olin students to participate in NASA research projects on an on-going basis. A team of ten students is participating in this new research venture that is led by Professors Gill Pratt and Steve Holt.
  • Funding Opportunities:
During the past several months, five proposals have been submitted for grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) and the Spencer Foundation. In total, the proposals are requesting approximately one million dollars. If funded, some of these research projects will allow Olin faculty and students to engage in a wide-variety of research projects ranging from developing information technology tools to supporting and advancing social science research and education. Other research areas include prototyping solar energy products, conducting cross-disciplinary research combining physics, biology and mathematics, and creating a motivational course in cryptology and coding theory that will reveal the excitement and relevance of mathematics in early undergraduate education.
  • OIR funded Student Activities:
OIR awarded several Olin students a small amount of funding to pursue educational activities. Students used the funding to attend international events and conferences to enhance presentation skills, learn about new technologies and innovations in math education, green building and ethnicity. Students involved in independent study attended a competition to gain valuable insights in the design and performance of solar cars. These experiences will strengthen and enhance students' knowledge and increase their skills in a wide variety if areas.
