Olin Foundation Makes Additional Grant to Olin College
Lawrence W. Milas, the chairman of the Olin College Board of Trustees and president of the F. W. Olin Foundation, announced this week that the foundation will make an additional endowment grant of $25 -$35 million to Olin College. The grant will augment the foundation's earlier donations to the college, which are valued at approximately $400 million. This latest gift brings the total value of the foundation's commitment to the college into the $400-500 million range, making it one of the top three largest gifts in the history of U.S. higher education.

Mr. Milas said the grant marked the end of the foundation's giving program, which stretches back to the late 1930s, when industrialist Franklin W. Olin established a private philanthropic foundation with his personal wealth. In the more than 60 years the foundation has been in operation, it has funded 77 buildings on 58 college campuses and made more than $800 million in grants.

For details, please check out Mr. Milas's remarks, which are posted on BlackBoard (point your browser to Olin Community/Events and Initiatives).

Monthly Update on East Hall Construction

Despite some rainy conditions, good progress was made on East Hall during the month of April. The installation of utility connections to the building began, including electric, emergency electric, tel/data and fire water services. The crew also started to install an underground site drainage system. For more information on the progress made during the month of April, visit:

Olin 100 Novels
A committee is pooling suggestions of titles for inclusion on Olin's list of 100 novels. The Olin 100 novels will be literature to consider reading in a student's time at Olin. Completing the list will be an individual challenge, with some sort of recognition involved.

If you would like to add some of your favorite novels to the list please post your ideas to: http://lemming.research.olin.edu/mrwiki/TheOlinNovels. Suggestions must be received by June 15.

For those unfamiliar with posting to a wiki, please scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "EditText." The formatting will be clear. Contact Dee Magnoni with questions.

Where' Are the Vending Machines?
If you have a sweet tooth or crave salty chips, you'll have to wonder over to Babson to find a snack this summer. Due to poor sales in our snack vending machines, our vendor has removed the machines from campus. We tried to negotiate a way to keep them, but all efforts failed. We will try to get a new vendor to bring perhaps only two machines in and see what happens. Until then, perhaps you didn't need those chips anyway.

Trivia
In the last issue of The Link we asked where Franklin W. Olin's son, F.W. Olin, Jr. went to college? And we also wanted to know what F.W. majored in. Congratulations to Chris Murphy who replied that F.W. attended Cornell and majored in chemical engineering. Chris will be receiving Olin gear for his correct response.

Check back in the fall when trivia resumes with tougher questions and better prizes! Thanks to all who played.
