Day of Silence Planned
Open, Olin's LGBT-support organization (previously known as FFLAG), is sponsoring a campus-wide event known as The Day of Silence on Wednesday, April 21. The Day of Silence is a day in which people of all sexual orientations and gender identities who support LGBT rights take a vow of silence (for the whole day or a specified portion of the day) to recognize and protest the silence that LGBT people face each day.

Open is providing stickers for all those who wish to participate in this event—both those actively participating and those who would like to participate but cannot due to previous obligations. Cards with more information concerning The Day of Silence will also be provided to participants intending to remain silent. Stickers and cards will be available on April 20 in the Campus Center Dining Hall. Those who participate and support this event are invited to attend a dinner at 6:00 p.m. in the Dining Hall. This meal will be co-sponsored by the Office of Student Life; faculty and staff meals will be free of charge. The dinner will conclude with a very general and informal student-led discussion.

Note to Faculty and Staff from Solar Car Independent Study
Some of you are already aware of the Solar Car Independent Study that started this semester. Our initial goal was to use this semester for research and design with the ultimate goal of racing in a competition next spring. After reading, The Winning Solar Car: A Design Guide for Race Teams, researching other team's designs, and talking to our advisor (as well as the machine shop guys), we decided to revise our goals. Gill brought to our attention the Grand DARPA Challenge, an autonomous vehicle competition in the desert of California and Nevada. This race seems to incorporate the philosophy of Olin regarding innovation and practicality. The challenge would incorporate ME in designing for the off-road capabilities of the vehicle as well as ECE/CS in the control systems for autonomous behavior. Thus, our present goal is to compete in the second Grand DARPA Challenge which will be held in the spring of 2006, which will give us adequate time to prepare. As preparation for DARPA, mainly for experience in car construction and design purposes, we aim to compete in the SAE Mini-Baja off-road vehicle competition in the spring of 2005. This competition will give us insight into the off-road aspect of DARPA.

Right now, we are looking into our options regarding funding for both endeavors. We have been in contact with Corporate Relations, OIR and VP Institutional Advancement to get information about sources of funding. However, if any of you have contacts at companies that would possibly be willing to support us, that would be great. We are looking for sponsorship from larger corporations in the form of monetary grants as well as businesses that would be willing to donate materials. Our project will require a variety of materials ranging from steel tubing to electronic components. At this point, we know we will need various sensor arrays, tires, suspension and transmission components, wireless communication, GPS, and software; however, other items of use will be determined when we are further along in the design process. If you or any of your colleagues at other institutions and/or corporations are particularly knowledgeable in the fields essential to the success of our PROJECT, any input or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Please contact Matthew Brouillard through email OR by phone at 781-454-9117. Thank you so much for your support!
