The Office of Student Life will be sponsoring a student/staff lunch at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14 in the dining hall. This will be an opportunity for students and staff to get to know each other in a casual lunchtime environment. Student hosts will "adopt" a staff member and join other students for lunch and light conversation. All staff are welcome—the more the better! Come help foster the Olin community spirit! Contact Ellen Cooney or Carol Kelley for more information.
We are asking staff to RSVP to Carol Kelley so we can be sure to have enough student hosts.
Last week the Financial Service department had three solid days of Jenzebar training on the general ledger module of the system. Training focused on the mechanics of using the system, but also allowed time for in-depth discussion of internal controls, and policies and procedures. Many forms, and certain policies and procedures currently in use will need to be modified to work with the Jenzebar system. Financial Services will communicate these changes to the community through individual training and on Blackboard. Purchasing training on the Jenzabar system will be in June, with a November 1 “go-live” date for both modules. The Fixed Asset and Budget modules will be implemented after the first two are functional. As part of transitioning away from using Babson's accounting software and personnel, Olin will hire three new positions this year - a Senior Accountant, a Purchasing Assistant and a Data Entry Clerk. The first two of these positions are posted at this time on BostonWorks.com. Hiring staff and having a system at Olin should not only improve service to the Olin community, but when implementation is complete, it will lower operating costs as well.
Zach First, assistant dean of Student Life, has been admitted to the Harvard Graduate School of Education's doctoral program in higher education. A search for Zach's replacement is already underway. In making this announcement, Dean Rod Crafts praised Zach “for his many contributions to the Olin community, including his work with the Honor Code and Board, the residence life program, orientation, and student activities, his advocacy for students, his membership on countless committees, and his professionalism.”
The Summer Book Program Advisory Committee has recommended Phantoms in the Brain by V.S. Ramachandran and Sandra Blakeslee as the summer '04 reading assignment. The book has been widely heralded, including this tribute from Nobel laureate Francis Crick – “This is a splendid book…If you are at all interested in how your brain works, this is a book you must read.” Books will be distributed to current students before the end of the semester and to new students in June. Staff and faculty interested in reading the book and participating in the Panel Discussion should notify Rod Crafts by April 9.

In order to improve the taste and service of the coffee service provided by the College, we will be changing vendors next Thursday, April 8. Aramark Refreshment Services will be installing new machines that brew single cups using the filter pack of your choice. The filter pack is sealed tight to guarantee a fresh cup each time. You can choose between three varieties of tea and six verities of coffee. And yes, there is hot chocolate as well. The machines will be swapped out beginning at 9:00 am and Customer Service Reps will be on hand to guide you through the easy use of the machines. They will also be here Friday from 9-11:00 am to accommodate people who are not here on Thursday. Please do not order any more coffee from our current vendor, FilterFresh. The Olin College team at the Needham Spelling Bee was among the three teams to make it to the final round of the April 1 contest. Despite a pitched three-way battle with the teams who won over the last two years, the Olin squad (Nicole Hori, Leslie Larocca and Joe Hunter) came to grief on “Pythian,” which means “of or relating to Delphi or its oracle of Apollo.” The winning team was the Needham High Hopes, who also took top honors last year.
